Got some malayan shrimp from Gan today (just arrived) and some of them have fantastic colours, and all of them pregnant. My malayans from the old tank also had colours, but by the time I get them into the new set up they've all gone colourless. The shrimps from Gan also close to colourless by the time I got home in the evening.

Question: how do you get them to take on their colours again? Also my rainbowfish (boesmani) has been harassing them, does the stress also cause colour loss?

Simon, my sympathies. Seriously I didnt expect rainbowfish to be quite so aggressive. They also harass the three-lined pencilfish []

Transportation stress them up a lot. Fish also like that mah. They will get back their colour when in your tanks.

so I thought, but the ones from my old tank never did reacquire their colours, and they also stopped being pregnant. Is there a correlation with colours and breeding?

however, some of the big mama from Gan yesterday got their colours back. So if you like malayans with red, maroon, green and blue go and get it now.

well if they lose their colours then it's kind of ex at 60 for $10. but if you're getting the colourful ones it's OK. You can get the regular ones outside at 100 for $12.

Thanks for the info, hwchoy. I was considering getting about 10 for my 3ft tank. 60 is too many.

even 60 shrimps for a 3' is too little.

WKS, my 80cm (2ft 8in) currently has about 130, and they don't look overcrowded. Even more so if its heavily planted as there are plenty of places to hide. Suggest you get 50-60 to start.

hwchoy, my concern is food for these little creatures. Currently I have 8 yamatos & unknown no. mosquito shrimps. Furthermore there are 4 otos and 1 leopard frog pleco. Algae is low in supply and these guys are feeding on algae wafer.

WKS, they don't just eat algae, they basically scavengers, even eating their own moulted shells. So it'll be an excellent idea as general cleaners of dead plant tissue, uneaten food, etc. Man, I even saw one grab a lenght of poo from a rainbow (it was still attached to the rainbow's butt, and it was dragging in front of the shrimp, how to resist [] ) and wolf it down!
