When you say killies, I think of two people. Stormhawk and Ronwill. =P These guys have an insane knowledge of killies. A walking encylopedia...those that you find in the library that you know you can't lift up.

hello folks,
i noticed we do have another killifish in our LFS. i saw a big tankfull in seaview.
not too sure if they have females? they are very small like 1-1.5cm only. growing to 3cm
norman's lampeye
http://www.aka.org/wak/Ref_Library/P...ro.normani.htm
they do look like good tank mates for clown killies.
hello folks,
is norman's lampeye diffcult to keep?
i like to try some in a planted tank.
please advice thanks!
No, not at all but you would want to get healthy fishes to start with and get more because these are schooling killies. Also, make sure that the tank is large enough and covered. They should do well in a planted tank and if you are lucky, you should see some fry as well. The only lampeye I'm looking for, is Poropanchax brichardi. Saw them once at GC last year but because of some lousy excuses, I didn't get them. Now, I'm really curious who bought those fishes...
Currently keeping large predatory fish 🐟
Hello shixuan bro,
are these norman's lampeye annual or non-annual?
Poropanchax normani is a non-annual killie.

John,
Commonly found species for sale in our LFS are as follows:
Nothobranchius rachovii
Nothobranchius guentheri
Nothobranchius eggersi
Nothobranchius foerschi
Aphyosemion australe Orange
Fundulopanchax nigerianus
Fundulopanchax gardneri
Poropanchax normani
Pseudepiplatys annulatus
Aplocheilus lineatus
All these typically do not come with collection codes unless they were bred at home or from a reputable source. WYSIWYG at most LFS but be very vigilant because some of them do make mistakes and mismatch the females. Unless you are truly confident you have the right females, don't buy them if you intend to spawn them. Supply is erratic and some of the fish may have been fed with hormone food to make them more colorful so as to encourage sales.

Hello stormhawk,
thanks for your killifish list. certainly helpful for newbies like me.
how long does Nothobranchius guentheri live? max 1 year?
i will like to keep some Aphyosemion australe Orange, Fundulopanchax gardneri and Nothobranchius guentheri in a large 4ft heavily planted tank.
along with some shrimps and snails. is this setup possible and advisable?
thanks
Not advisable to keep Nothobranchius guentheri in a large 4ft planted tank. It's an Annual and given the short lifespan, it would be more appropriate to keep this species in a bare tank with peat and thereafter, collect, dry and store the peat. Not necessary to have a filter as long as you do regular tank maintenance which I've mentioned in my earlier post on another thread.
As for the rest, it's okay.

The group of killies you selected can be kept together in such a tank, but not with shrimps. Fp. gardneri can and will consume smaller shrimps. The notho is capable of doing the same as well since they do have pretty large mouths. They will spawn in there but any eggs present or fry that hatched may not survive unless they hide very well.
N. guentheri usually lasts for around 1 year. They grow up quick then after the 8th month or so will start to deteriorate. Those at the LFS ought to survive if you feed them well. With good feeding and a decent living space, they will thrive. If your intention is not to spawn them then keeping them in a community setting is fine. Just note that they usually require live food to survive, unless you "trained" them to accept sinking pellets and such. Frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp are probably your next best bets to keep them alive in such conditions. A. australe and Fp. gardneri will take sinking pellet. They just need time to adjust to such foods.

hello shi xuan and stormhawk bro,
thanks for advice.
So for setup in a big 4ft heavily planted tank with low light/tech plants, java ferns, java moss, crypts, hornworts, vals, bogwoods, black sand/soil.
what ratio of Male/Females should i aim for for each species? or should i only keep a pair for each species?
Actaully i wanted to breed them too, but i hope they can breed and survive in a big natural setup tank. i
dont like the idea of taking out mops collecting eggs. etc etc.... sorry for being lazy.
what big shrimps can i keep with these killies? amanno shrimps? i noticed my Fp. gardneri ignore my malayan shrimps, but the shrimps are hard to seen in the tank, they are transparant.
currently i have a Fp. gardneri pair from LFS for about 3 weeks, they started to dance this week near the java fern roots! i hope they breed soon.
as for food i have been feeding live tubifex worms and frozen blood worms daily, weekly rotation.
i have a bottle of brine shrimps eggs but those are reserved for babies.
thanks!
hello bros,
a few more questions:
how long does Fp. gardneri and Aphyosemion australe Orange live?
if i keep N. guentheri in a natural setup with black sand/soil will it lay eggs on the sand/soil? what if i put a container with peat in the natural setup.
will the N. guentheri prefer to lay eggs in peat or sand/soil?
thanks
Only big shrimps like the fan shrimps and Amano will be left alone, provided the gardneri are fed well.
Fp. gardneri and Aphyosemion australe can live for up to 4 years at a lower temperature. They typically survive up to 2.5 years or so in our climate.
N. guentheri must be kept separately if you intend to spawn them. They are plowers so they will lay their eggs literally everywhere as long as the male can press the female down. I've seen them spawning over bare bottom tanks before. You can place the peat container in the natural setup but whether they lay eggs in there is another question altogether. Sometimes the fish ignore what you give them, and spawn over a site to their preference.

Not trying to hijack the thread. Just quick question for stormhawk.
I had N. eggersi (blue) that I hatched from eggs myself. Their look started deteriorated in around 3+ month and simply dropped dead in about 4+ month of age. I believe the water and food were okay, in heavily planted tank. Do you think this is normal or there might be something I must investigate. My climate is similar with Singapore, I believe.
