    Hi Joe....thanks.
"high maintenance" is a relative term, to me, they are managable.....on average i have to spend like 1-2 hours per week for each tank (water change, fertilizer, plant trimming, clean algae, etc).
i don't know if that is called high maintenance.

i believe once you get the basic technique right, it is not difficult to maintain all these tanks.
i remember few years ago when i first started, i used to spend like 3-4 hours per day......maybe i'm getting better...maybe i'm getting lazier....lol.

    Re: My tanks @ 2012

After the initial setup, the trick is to establish a fixed daily routine of maintenance, including feeding. However this routine must not be disrupted by any unforeseen events, unless another person can continue with the routine.

If a disruption of this routine occurs, things will usually start to go downhill from there. So it is important to ensure that such a routine can be continued indefinitely, otherwise valuable livestock will be lost.

Rotala sp Goias is not a very common plant, if i remembered it correctly it was brought into Msia/Spore from Taiwan, about S$10 per stem at that time (few years ago).
i guess after some "uncontrolled" propogation by hobbyist, the price should be much cheaper now.

i'm sorry but i do not know where you can get it commercially.
i got mine few years ago from my friend and i always keep some "seeds" with me since.
Little Green Corner farm is strictly for private consumption only! LOL.

anyway, it is not an easy plant, in order for it to grow big and red, the requirement for lighting and ferts are very high.
for a stem plant, it is also a relatively slow growing plant.

by the way...this plant is called 红头趴趴熊 in Mandrin.
"红头" means "read head"...you can see that only the head/crown is red and not the whole stem.
"趴趴熊" means "creeping bear"....it is a creeping plant, not for background. given enough light, they will grow low and dense, even hugging the soil.

so good luck in finding your "red headed creeping bear"...maybe you can search from some HongKong or Taiwan plant selling sites.

I think over time with the hobby, u get both better AND lazier

For myself, I am gaining in the latter but not necessarily on the former. lol.

Sorry I was not clear with what I meant by high maintenance. I was thinking if your setup required high light, CO2, ferts, etc. Rather than one that requires minimum "add-ons". I guess the word I should have used is hi/low-tech.
    Cheers,
    Joe

红头趴趴熊!?!!? I think this plant is not simple. I recalled many years ago someone selling it on this forum. Yeah, not cheap. Rotala all flock together. They love lights and highly nuritional water

    Re: My tanks @ 2012

    ahhh...yes Joe, high-tech, definitely.

for competition tank....it is quite hard to go low-tech because you want all your plants to grow fast, nice and healthy.
so you need all the necessary stuffs like sufficient lighting, cooling water, pressurized CO2, good filtration, good substrate system and adequate fertilizer.
the only area i'm not very "high-tech" - i do not have chiller. but i put all my tanks in air-con room.

but it is just a hobby anyway, as long as you are happy and enjoying what you are doing, i guess it does not matter whether you are hi- or low-tech.

    Re: My tanks @ 2012

i doubt you can get this plant from LFS or farms, locally, for now.
the best chance you have is to find some local hobbyist who is willing to sell, and you are prepared to pay for a premium price.

i'm sorry but i'm not selling mine.
they grow too slow to sell. LOL.
    plus i'm not really "local".

    good luck bro!

    Hi all,

Anyone familiar with Taiwan aquarium or shop outlet selling plants? Can provide me the more details. Got relative staying there and might be able to get their help.
