I recently bought a used 2028 canister. Inside one of the trays were filled with a media packed in a bag. On opening find something resembling a sand. Only difference is they were golden in color. What media is that?.

Pictures will help tremendously. Offhand it sounds like Seachem Purigen to me.

Purigen is much lighter in weight as compare to any sands.... Feel the weight and you will know whether it is sand or purigen...
Or like |Squee| has mentioned, a picture will help.

Ok this is the pic of the media. I looked up the names you have suggested but it has no resemblance to this pic.

Looks like a DI resin to me. Why would anyone place this in the filter?

Re: What media is it ?.

I agree with BFG. The golden orange is just like the DI resin found in RO filters as a final stage polish.
Purigen is more milky and opaque in appearance.

I'm just as puzzled why its in a canister filter? That resin would be spent and totally loaded with crap in record timing. After that, it'll just be a hindrance to waterflow.

Either way, it's likely useless already and can be thrown out. Unlike Purigen, one cannot "recharge" DI resin at home.

I haven't used or looked at Mosura Softwater for awhile, but there's also a slight chance it may be that. However, given the cost of Mosura Softwater, it is unlikely someone will drop such a large quantity in a canister.

Thanks guys for your help in identfifying this mysterious media. Now that it has been determined as having no business in the filter, it will be disposed off.
