its fungus, nothing to do with gravel/soil. It can happen in gravel-less fish tank.
Hi all, sorry for newbie question.
Have recently tried setting up small tank with ada amazonia.
And noticing that every uneaten food will be covered by white thingy. Very fast within less than a day.
Never seen that before in gravel tank. Which food usually will just breakdown scattered.
What are those? Fungous?
How dangerous are they?
Any idea to prevent?
Is it typical fron ada amazonia or any soil will cause this?

Try to clear the uneaten food as soon as possible if not it will break down and produce ammonia, which will be harmful to your shrimps in excess.
Hmm.. fungus.
Maybe ph too low. Will measure and prolly add some coral chips

Increasing the pH should not stop the fungus, removing the uneaten food will.
Why do you think its a pH issue in the first place?
Was thinking that fungus lived in acidic state.
No?
Its weird because my other tank never had this kind of symtomp.
Uneaten food will just soften and break.
No white fuzzy thing.
Still trying to find more reference.
Btw
Anyone have seen shrimp touch these kind of food?
And some of the fungi hard to remove without removing soil,
Which in turn kind of damage some of my planting,
Siphoning also hard. Any idea?

How come you left the food if alot is uneaten?
For me, most of the time beyond 24 hours I will remove unless it is left there deliberately.
But then again most of us practice not to over feed as it promotes a unsightly ugly white planaria

My stressed kamikaze shrimp seems to be fasting. Hence there is always tiny pieces leftover on the soil.
I tried to pickup uneaten food with tweezers but they always break.
You guys dont siphon everyday right? Else how to remove?

Those uneaten food, even if they break down and disappear, will still contribute to ammonia and bioload of the tank, stressing the biofilters and the shrimps. Stress shrimps, especially ammonia stressed shrimps, tend to eat very little, creating even more rotten food.
Like Felix mentioned, feed less, and remove uneaten food after a few hours. What kind of food are you feeding by the way?
Been stop feeding for 3 days more.
I feed hikari crab cuisine and sometime small chunk of hikari algae waffer.
Found this yesterday.

Another consideration for the identification of Saprolegnia/fungi is that out breaks often occur in aquarium/pond with large amounts of decaying organic matter, with low pH and poor circulation in the area of decay.
...
Saprolegnia will often get started if there is a large amount of decomposition of nitrogenous organic material such as dead fish left in the aquarium or large amounts of high protein fish food such as krill/shrimp. Injured fish with open sores will amplify this potential problem. This is why I generally recommend against using raw shrimp cycling method recently re-popularized on the internet by a few websites and some forums such as Yahoo answers and that is to use raw shrimp to seed the nitrogen cycle as this can result (as per my own studies) in Saprolegnia getting to strong a hold in a new aquarium (please read further about the lifecycle of Saprolegnia zoospores to also explain the risks, as well as the references).

Ada Amazonia could be acidic
Sharing is Caring
I think so too. The difference with my big tank is just ada amazonia vs quartz gravel.
And some kamikaze shrimp.
I am considering to revamp tank now. To cleanup remaining spores. Just to recover all of them. Still thinking how

Can I give you a suggestion?
Use a small plate, cut a coke bottle or if your pocket can afford.. feeding tray.
It will be tons easier, not to mention look nicer. In case you want to test using a cut bottle. Remember to tie fishing string.
