Is it possible to instead of using 5ml of tank water for testing, i just use 2.5ml or 1ml of tank water and test it, and multiply the no. of drops by 2 and 5 respectively?

margin of error go up loh, unless you can get those micropipette thingys and do some calibration, then you use 0.1ml also can.

erm.. what error are you talking about? from the measurment of the volume of tank water or from the kH reading?

Oic. you want to make your KH soln last longer.

I think it is not a good idea because the it may requires a minimum amount tank water which is 5ml in order for the KH soln to work accurately.

No point saving and ending up with a wrong reading thus messing up your tank.

    Simple mathematics....

Not every drop is identical in size... of course there will be some measurement error. So if you multiply by 2 or 5, the error will also be 2 or 5 times.

Furthermore, you cannot measure 1/2 drop. If you use 2.5ml, you can measure to the nearest 2, ie KH = 2, 4, 6, or 8 and so on. So if the actual KH is 2.9, the colour will probably not change on the first drop. So if you add the second drop and the colour change, you will read the result as 4. The error will be 1.1. It will be worse if you use 1 ml. You can only read 5, 10, 15, and so on...
