If your setting up a new tank, think no need use coral sand as substrate as the sulawesi 8.5 minerals will already bring the ph to the correct level.
Just use any inert substrate that you please.

Help need for a Sulawesi tank

Hmm would coral sand be better if I didn't put any minerals? Or just coral chips in filter.

Re: Help need for a Sulawesi tank

Take note that using of Sulawesi Minerals 8.5, special methods are needed to make the minerals to dissolve fully or close to fully in distilled/RO water, it is either by mixing the minerals with boiling water or using CO2 to aerate. If using CO2 to aerate, you are recommended by the manufacturer to aerate the dissolved mixture with normal air for at least 4 hours (if i remember correctly). As i am unable to get the minerals 8.5 to fully dissolved in distilled water, my pH is around 7.8.

The sulawesi minerals 7.5 is able to dissolve fully using distilled/RO (recommended by manufacturer) but they are not for more complicated shrimps like harlequin or red line.

If use coral sand as substrate, you need to monitor the GH.

Agreed. You should also add mineral rocks since coral sand is a ph buffering agent, it does not fufill the sulawesi parameters.
