    Hello bros,
Recently, I've got myself some tiger shrimps from c328. They looked pretty healthy(judging from how active they are) however, they have since started to jump out of the tank Which is really frustrating. Currently about 5 of them have became dried shrimps -.-

Any shrimp pros out there to show e some light? My tank's(17L) ph is on the low side abt 6.0, ammonia 0ppm (using seachem ammonia alert), gh 4, nitrite .

Hi guo, I'm no expert but have some basic suggestions for you. I do not keep tiger shrimp hence I'm unsure of the parameters but most research you should have done before buying them.
Firstly you should consider getting a proper test kit, those test tube kind like api or sera, rather than using those alert for accuracy of your parameters.
Secondly, most shrimp other than sulawesi as much as I know thrive well in lower temperature and high oxygen environment.
Thirdly, how are your water change regimes like. It is recommended to age your water and use premium dechlorine or if your budget permits, ro/Di water system. Shrimp are much more sensitive compared to fishes.
Lastly, you might want to test your nitrate levels to know if it could be high levels of nitrate causing stress to the shrimp.

    Re: suicidal tiger shrimps!!

As far as i know; tigers fare better in slightly higher PHs.

Mine used to be between 6.9 to 7.4, then i'll proceed with a drip water change...and they do breed.

Whats the temperature of the setup? Also, how were they acclimatised? And are there any other inhabitants besides the tigers in the setup?

You also left out the reading for the nitrite, i think.

    Re: suicidal tiger shrimps!!

Hi bros, Thanks for your advices!

My nitrite levels is 0mg/L, and the tank is always ard 26 degrees Celcius.
my tank is a planted one together with lamp eye fish, forktail, whiptail catfish and a couple of other shrimps(cherry and snowball shrimp). The funny thing is that the tiger shrimps did not jump out in a day, But rather they jumped out one by one on different days. The tank Was cycled for about a month with some bacterial tablets before introducing the shrimps in.

I do agree with Bro zeltade, the seachem ammonia alert seems questionable.(I only read abt the negative review after buying) Just a question, is it possible for ammonia to be 0ppm and nitrite levels to be 1ppm?

    Re: suicidal tiger shrimps!!

Hi guo, it is possible for ammonia to be 0ppm and nitrite to be 1ppm as they are two different type of bacteria. One bacteria 'converts' ammonia into nitrite, while another 'converts' nitrite into nitrates. Both requires a high oxygen environment to survive, and the bacteria that 'converts' nitrite takes longer to colonize than the one that 'converts' ammonia.

    Re: suicidal tiger shrimps!!

Hi TS,your tank is 17 litres? It is a bit small, shrimps are good jumpers and your tank is a little too small for them.

I kept tiger/FR/yamato/malayan in 2 feet tank without any problems. I think your lights/anything moving in front of tank mights scared them off and cause them to accidentally jumped out.

Create more hiding place for them so they can hide when they feel threatened/scared...if possible get a bigger tank?? Around 1.5-2 feet is good start for easy shrimps as you can control the water parameters easier and water quality tends to be more stable.

Check out my Blog on planted tank, good for newbies ( i am lazy to retype all the info i know, so please click and read below link... i hope you don't fall asleep while reading)

    Re: suicidal tiger shrimps!!

Hi wongce, it's a gex glassterior 450 tank(45*20*22) . Yea, might be one of the causes too as my lampeye occasional jump out too.
Damn, shdnt have gotten this tank! I think there's ample hiding places for them as it's a planted one just that the height is a little too short(no wonder it comes with a lid)
