While waiting for the Diana book to arrive, let me play using my unused pot sand and java moss....
Hope to introduce 1-2 tetra but worry night time will not have oxygen in the tank since this is a low tech setup.

    Re: My small coffee tank

gardening soil can be use in planted aquarium but you'll have to see the content, some soil might contain extra fertilizer that is fatal to fauna and diana recommend using organic soil and cover with lapis sand. as for test is to test the ammonia level. some bros here have recommend horti moss and one of the previous moderator juggler uses coco peat. i'm not sure whether your soil is organic or contain extra fertilizer so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Eh,do not to use those soil with chicken shit,or whatever shit...

Cover with lapis sand to minimize debris floating around and cause a muddy tank.

As per what ciaossu mentioned, test for ammonia,no2,no3 and cycle properly... It may need some WIWO to clear off extra nutrients..

Check out my Blog on planted tank, good for newbies ( i am lazy to retype all the info i know, so please click and read below link... i hope you don't fall asleep while reading)

Change the substrate to a proper one for aquarium, fill in more water and keep a betta instead.

    Just Java moss.
Maybe will remove the feeder fish and add shrimp at later stage.

    Re: My small coffee tank

betta is easy to maintain because they have lungs you do not need a air bubble system, just need water chaneg on a regular basis...for your tank , 3 days will do

better still, soon u can breed them easily if you are passionate enough
