Setting Up 2ft Tank, Please Advise...

I'm setting up a 2 feet tank. I need to get the followings:
1) 2 feet light (PL or normal tube)
2) 4KG of black gravel
3) large piece of drift wood to fit into my tank
4) wires meshes, riccia and nylon strings
5) 100 pcs of fish that will school (swim together)
6) some colorful shrimps (10 ~ 20)

[Questions]
a) can i put 200 pcs of fish in a 2ft * 1ft * 1ft tank?
b) do i need those expensive lights for riccia or normal one can liao?


Anyone know where to go and get all at once? or cheap? got lobang? SMS me: 9696-6522

200 of cardinal sized fish is too many...
The bioload will be a headache and not very nice to see such an crowded tank.
Also take into consideration you might add shrimps or other fishes in future.

I have good success with 2x36W PL on my 60cm tank. Any lamp with high lumen output with a good spectrum range will do well. Don't really need expensive tubes.

Lights, meshes can get at NA.
Driftwood can get at Y934, alot!!!
nylon line just use normal fishing line (4-6lbs) can get at tackle shop
gravel can get at almost any LFS, ADA can go Plantas.

a) Roughly how much does it cost for a 2x36W PL? What is PL?
b) NA as in Nature Aquraim as near Novena MRT
c) Y934? Got postal code? ship shop name?
d) tackle shop? where is it?
e) black gravel very hard to find.....
f) ADA can go Plantas??? what u mean?........
g) how to cycle a tank? i just filled up with water, and put it there for 2 nights....
h) do i need to input CO2 because i intend to fill it with riccia~~

btw, do i need to put salt? for my goldfish, i put 1 teaspoon of salt in every 10 gallons,

i'm planning to put the following fishes:
a) Neon Tetras (100x)
b) White Clouds (10x ~ 20x)
c) Panda Corydoras Catfish (10x ~ 20x)
d) Glass Fish (6x ~ 10x)
e) Honey Gouramis (1x ~ 5x)
f) Ghost Shrimp (6x ~ 10x)

With that amount of critters in a 2 footer? What are you trying to achieve? You would only get a tankful of algae and dead critters by the end of the day with that kind of bioload. Please kindly read up on the articles both in the FAQ section of AQ and stuff in the krib (a website with loads of info on both fish keeping and plants).

The fish will grow, and soon the bioload will be too much to handle. Please reconsider. It will affect the health of all the other fish and plants in the tank.

Agree with Peter. I have about 35 small fishes in my 2 footer and I already consider it too crowded! With that many fishes in your 2 footer, you will have a tough time keeping them healthy and alive ! I suggest you consider a bigger tank if you plan to keep that many fishes.

please make full use of the FAQs, LFS list, articles and stickies in the forum. if you have bothered to read them and spend some time looking through the information, you will have a better idea of what is possible and the options you have for your tank.

and 200 fishes (even small ones) is at least 150 too many for your tank.

sigh. Its always sad to see how starters are affected by the new tank syndrome (NTS) and tend to overstock their tanks with massive amounts of fish, paying no advise to others. after a week or so, they would come back complaining or crying over split milk on why their tank has crashed or failed.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic but please heed advise from those who have experience, 200 fishes in a 2ft is way out of control.

I'm using a internal power filter which is just right for my tank (3x the tank size), about 200 Litres per hour.

But I find that there are some waste it cannot clean lying somewhere else.

In my another tank, I have goldfish, and I used otas and snails to eat up the waste.

Now, how can I clean up the waste in this tank? How did you guys do it?

Please advise.

Otos and snails do NOT eat fish shit. They eat algae, leftover food and other edible organic matter (dead fish/shed plant leaves), but NOT shit. If you have been reading up, you would have learn about the nitrogen cycle, whereby fish waste is converted into nitrates which is removed by plants or water changes. But with too many fish, inadequate filtration or insufficient plants, this cycle cannot function.

The best advice you can get is to go learn and understand what a healthy tank (i.e. healthy fish and plants) needs to thrive. Starting off with the idea that 200 fish will live happily in a 2 ft tank (with little clue of whether this will be biologically suitable) is plain silly in my book.

Why not invest a little time in a good beginner's book like Aquarium Fish (by Ulrich Schliewen in the Barron's Series, with a discus on the cover) which costs something like less than $20 (or go look in the library). If this is too hard a task, my remaining advice is keep rocks - they don't need feeding or watering, just an occasional dusting.

Hi, thanks for the advise....

I have been rearing goldfish all along, and I put ota, and snails, and I have never had to siphon out the waste before (no waste to siphon)........

In my goldfish tank, I really saw a snail eating up the goldfish waste. And ota, it used to eat goldfish waste when I don't feed so frequently. Now it also eats goldfish food; chewing on the waste during snack time.

I just bought another filter which does about 300 L/H, hang at the back filter. I think it should be fine.

Fishes die on the 1st day = 3
Fishes die on the 2nd day = 0

Let's hope it stays that way! Cheers!

btw, in my goldfish tank, i have about 20 goldfish, 1 ota, 5 snails, and some plants, I only do water changes every month, and clean the filter every 2-3 weeks, it's quite clean`
