No such thing, it's just a greedy claim aimed at lazy people.
I don't know about saltwater though...
There is this brand "CoralReef" that has been marketing pretty agressively about this so-call new type of tank that needs to change water only every 3 yrs.
I know 3 yrs is very far fetched and I believe it works by some overflow biological filter that is supposed to be very efficient thus the "no need to change water" claim. The tank looks pretty nice on the exterior.
Anyone bought this or seen this and wish to comment ? Suitable for planted tank (some type of filtering method loses too much CO2) ?

There was a talk given by a lecturer from Singapore Poly (I think) about this at the International Fish show. They have been working with CR on this project. They (the poly) have tanks like this that work.
It's not rubbish. I was too busy at the show to really pay attention, but I believe its a sump filter. It's usefulness is questionable for planted tanks as water change for a planted tank is more then just about removing nitrates.
I encourage ppl to look up more about it. I wouldn't say its a new concept though. Another aquarium set up buisness makes this claim about its own sump filters to its customers.
