    Re: algae on moss

Some form of hair algae. Causes: might be too much light, too little CO2, too high amount of NPK, Nutrients equilibrium is off, and are some reasons

for now - try shooting a little Seacheam Excel on them. or peroxide from Guardian. Be very careful though. These act like bleach

    Re: algae on moss

I have them too but I am manually removing them since the moss are in my CRS tank. I have half a mind to remove them and treat the moss separately first before reintroduction into the tank.

    Re: algae on moss

Looks like sort of fungus/ fuzz algae to me??, maybe you can manual removal + spot dose diluted excel as per what suggested by other members, i got them when i just started the tank, they did not harm my fauna though.... i think my shrimp eat them after it is killed by excel

Note: do not dose excel near shrimps.... or directly onto shrimps....

You can use pincer to remove the fuzz one by one. Becareful not to pull out your plants at the same time

I do the same thing; I use my pincer to slowly remove them. I have been doing that consecutively for the past two days. I hope it contains the spread as I am not particularly keen on dosing excel into the CRS tank.

Malayan shrimp will not help much in this type of situation. It is time to get physical!!!!

    Re: algae on moss

I think the algae will reproduce at a rate higher than the effectiveness of the shrimp. I would rather you get "physical" and remove them and have the shrimp help contain the spread.

I had something like this too. Dumped 50 starved cherries and they cleared in overnight.

you dumped 50, he dumped a few.
i'll normally remove as much by hand then let cleaner crew work.

I also encountered it during the first few days after i flooded my HC DSM tank, these type of algae seem to flourish while the tank parameters are still in the process of stabilizing... i also sent in my army of commando cherry shrimps and they cleared the algae like it was yummy candy floss.

shrimps love those kind of algae, depending on the amount, but it seems like yours might take a huge army of cherries!

Wow, I never know that cherries were THAT effective at taking out hair algae. I bought some pelia for a new tank I'm starting and realized later that they had some fuzz algae growing on them. Is it safe to introduce them to my new tank and add cherries to kill all the fuzz algae?

Not too sure about fuzz algae, you'll have to try and see... but for the fine thread/floss-like algae that tend to tangle amongst plants i've personally observed the shrimps clearing them.

Like what felix_fx2 mentioned, they are the most effective when used in large numbers.

For my case, i usually only put in the shrimps to help clear algae after the tank is cycled (or close to being cycled), and i still do a 1 hour drip acclimation before they are transferred, even though my tanks all share similar parameters. Although cherry shrimps are quite hardy, they are still vulnerable to toxic spikes and fluctuating conditions.

I've been moving a group of 35+ low-grade cherry shrimps around my newly cycled tanks lately (they are the "reject" ones culled from my shrimp breeding tank, i'm too soft-hearted to actually dispose of them or use them as feeder shrimp, so i just maintain another small tank for them to live in). They have become so good at their jobs that they have already been successfully transferred through 3 other tanks to help clear algae and detritus, and all still strong and healthy so far.
