    Hi all!

I am a total newbie with this hobby of fishes and have bare minimal knowledge on what are the basics i need to purchase, which species of fishes goes tgt, do i need an air pump if i have a filter? I was hoping that someone here could give me a beginner's starters list to help me and maybe also other newbies who are just starting off.

    1) what are the needed accessories. eg. tank, filter, lights, heater?
2)easy to keep species of fishes
    3)anything else?

    haha thanks guys!

Well, it's a good thing that you're looking for advice first. Step 1 to this: RESEARCH.
It depends mostly on your budget, but the bare minimum you can go with is a tank and filter. That is the BARE minimum (pun intended I guess.)

Then it would depend on what sort of tank you are going after. Several main types of tanks for Freshwater.
    -Community
    -Planted
    -Species
    -Biotope

You could read up more on these tanks to decide what you would like. Other equipment depends on the type of flora and fauna you want. For example you might want lights for some plants, or a cooler for some fish.
some other basic things you might want would be
Aquarium Decor- Flora, Rocks/Driftwood, Substrate ETC.
    FISH-DUUH
    Fish food for those fish.
Test Kits for your water parameters
    Aquarium Lighting

Other MORE important things you might need to know would be about Cycling, and New Tank Syndrome. So many pieces have been written about this, so I shall just link you to one.

Well, it's a good thing that you're asking questions and potentially saving your fishes lives. Also, welcome to the hobby!

For beginners, they can do up their hardware (tank, accessories, plants, deco) as much as they like.

But for fish, it is best for them to get a packet of mixed Platies (or Guppies). I frequently see beginners splash out good money on respectable fish, only to lose them all in a couple of months.

This is a hobby which requires a lot of experience and knowledge to keep fish from dying. It can be be very heart-breaking.

    Re: Newbie starting off

You may want to do preliminary research before committing.

Some of the questions you might want to ask yourself are:

    1) how big my tank I want
    2) What do I want to do with it? (like listed by bro jemswira)
    3) MOST importantly - your budget

Best to start up slow, plan your tank layout (e.g. sketch) and research things that you need. When i started out on this hobby, i a bit "kiasu", just charged into a LFS and bought all the things (which then I did not know how operate it properly xD).

    Re: Newbie starting off

Thread starter where are you now? Started or given up?
I am still screwing up after about 8mths of hobby. My guppies just keeps dying...check almost all I could but still die.
Usually happens when I introduce new guppies. They will have diesese...and spreads like wild fire.
After each incident i say no more.....yet i go back as the numbers inside the tank falls.
My heart so pain....and it's always that few that I fancy most dies 1st.
