Any bro can advise if assassin snail are good algae cleaner as Horn Nerite? I find horn nerite are very good algae cleaner but the only thing is that they don't fit well in CRS tank as they die off easily due to low PH. Any comments about assassin snail performance from other bro?

How low is your PH? Is it really the low PH that you mentioned kill your netrite snail? My netrite snail survives with PH ranging from 5.6 - 6.2.

Assassins do not eat much algae if any at all. They are very poor for cleaning algae but excellent for cleaning up pest snails and dead shrimps and fishes (so the bodies don't rot and foul your water.
If the horn nerite are dying, the assassin will too. At low pH and GH, their shells will melt and once a small hole punches through, they die. What is your GH?
I'm quite sure pH6 is still ok as long as your GH is not less than 3.
Note that pH is a log scale...pH6 is 10 times of pH7 but pH5.9 is 20 times. So as long as your pH is not below 6, they should not be melting.

My PH is around 6.2 to 6.5. They can only last a few days in the tank as after a few days, can see they stop moving and is at the bottom of my tank.

I'm not sure why that is happening...nerites are quite hardy from my experience. I stopped keeping them because of all the white eggs they deposit everywhere.
One thing's for sure, you cannot substitute nerite with assassins.

You can risk trying apple or ramhorn snails, but take care, they tend to reproduce fast.

    Hi noobz,

Can try zebra snails too. If condition they don't like very very fast it will climb out.(even good also it will climb out lol)

I have ramhorn if you need, but take heed as they grow fast. I do keep assassin snails and feed them with the excess snails.

Nerites habitats are of brackish waters, so the ph should be above 7 for them to thrive. They seem to grow faster in hard waters and when there's abundance of algae. And yea Zebra nerites climb out all the time, at times ending up under your furnitures and die there larger nerites has a higher survival rate, thou they're a real pain when they start laying eggs all over the place, even on each other's shells.

Had this issue when I have half a dozen horned nerites in a single 60L tank. When I keep only one or two in each tank, they seem to do well. No deaths and they take care of the algae on the tank glass, driftwood and leafed plants fairly well. I have a pair of ottos or starlight plecos in each tank as well. Most of my ottos and horned nerites have been with me for a few years now. However they don't seem to grow though. The only tank where I should still have abt 5-6 horned nerites in a single tank is my planted tank with fire yellows, ottos and a few corys, can always see a few on the rocks or tank walls but can't be certain if all original nerites are still around as it's not possible to see all of them at the same time in a planted/scaped tank.
So far I have only seen one nerite in the PRL tank with pits on the shell, I replace this nerite with one from the planted tank which is of slightly higher pH. After 2 months, it appeas to be recovering and still busy eating algae.

So sometimes they are not moving does not mean they are dead?

Snails do not remain in a single location for very long, they need to feed. If you still see it in the same location after a day or two, most likely already gone to heavan.

My horn nerite also dies off after like 2 weeks. Ph around 6. They just don't last long with me. And my green spot algae on the tank walls is very stubborn, otto can't remove at all

Perhaps an aquarium buffer might do the trick, try Seachem equilibrium, your tank might be lacking in essential minerals as it seems. Green spot algae is not relinquished by algae eaters & have to be removed physically, with something sharp, like a razor. If their occurrence is minimal, that's ok. I have some of these algae on my tank wall, but it doesn't bother the inhabitants much & will slowly recede as the water parameters become more stable.

Re: Horn Nerite Vs Assassin snail

I feel Horn Nerite is good for green spots on the glass. I kept several Horn Nerite, so far no green spot.

    Btw, i have a ques.

I have just restarted my tank like 1 mth ago. Was using quaz sand and changed to ADA. (PH from 8 to current 5.

Yesterday i noticed 4-5 assassins snails die together (got old got young) and all my snails are outside the water. Previously none of my assasins snail died but kept reproducing and very active.

When i restarted the tank, the ammonia lvl was high like 4cbm (use the solution type to measure) At that stage, no assassin die. Now is about 0.25cbm and 4-5 assassin snail die. The ammonia lvl slowly dropped as i did a 50% water change every week.

When i saw so many assassin snail died.... heart pain....

What could be the reason? Any kind soul can enterlightment me?
