The boyu lights are the universal self contained strip lights (styled metal ones) with integrated balasts that go over the aquarium right? We have several manufacturers with these types of lights (different setups for different lengths, PL for the shorterones) and they are cheap. Do you have any pictures of your mod? Im also sucky at DIY type stuff, but im willing to give it a try if its not to difficult!

Sorry no pic. it's about 1 ft but extendable to 1.5ft. uses PLS light.
