Some updates of my tank. The two batches of stem plants are not planted, left there to help control nutrient level while the ferns and bolbitis establishes.

I counted 14 pieces of drift wood inside.

    So green!!!

How about some contrasts with different shades of green and maybe some reds/browns/bronze (crypts, echinodoruses)? Or some light coloured rocks.

    Maybe its just the lighting.

One thing I dislike about tank photographs is they sometimes do not do justice to the tank as the depth of the tank is lost in the flat image.

after i remove the rotala, it will be a darker green through.

I do have some reddish stuff, wendtii tropica which is brownish and the pontederiifolia with reddish new leaves.

No suitable place for stem plants.

As for depth, some will wonder why amano's tank can achieve that. I think its because most of his tank are at least 2ft deep. Bigger tanks, which are able to show depth field well, are deeper than 2ft.

    Perhaps:
    - shadows, lighting (placement)
    - colours, shades
    - Amano has many compostions with mounds or valleys. Some he creates a bare path in the valley.
    - arranging plants in rows perpendicular to the front rather then parallel
    - size of plants and leaves. Big plants/leaves make small tanks look smaller. Small plamts with fine leaves make small tanks look bigger.

Update. Again, the 2 bunches of stem plants on both side are temporarily placed there. the Java fern on the right top seems messy.

Lorba, what do you feed your chocos with? Does it takes to flake food readily?

so far, they are still eating frozen brineshrimps and occassionally tetrabits. Seems not as interested in flake food. I guess it will take some time.

i like the updated arrangement...the empty center gives a more perspective view... a sense of depth, as if showing a section of a flowing river or something like that.

hi YES, your 3ft-riccia setup gives me some idea/inspiration, to create some perspective underwater view. All the while i got this thinking that short plant should be at foregrd. But after seeing yr setup, we could actually create some kind perspective visual effect by putting the riccia all the way to the background, with some taller plants at the side to the front.
I shall try this out in my upcoming tank. I hv just done a 2ft with the conventional tall from back to short in front setup, does not look impressive enough but i will leave it as it is cos hv spent some time setting up and don't to mess it up again

Roland, very seasoned tank. Look like a primitive forest.
BTW - curious to know what % of the substrate consists of rooted plants since you have quite a number of driftwood.

I've reduced the size of the java fern bunch on the right side. Just finish 1 phase of BBA battling, still got a lot on my bolbitis

For now, only the tenullus and crypts on the right and center are planted. All the rest are on wood. So my tank is fairly easy and fast to tear down and rescape.

Updates. BBA took over all my bolbitis after a 2wk oversea holidays. To make it worse, there is a fern diseases which took away most of my ferns, java and bolbitis as well.

As a result, almost bald tank! I've just put in some rotola green var and rotala green at the left 1/3 background of the tank, not shown in these pics.

    Nice!
I like your scapes! It's a pity BBA comes around this time, hope you can get the tank back on track.
