What could be the cause of the death? From what I know, their care should be the same as unimaculata, which probably means that other than a large tank, they also like to have their water cooler (Higher oxygen level). It actually applies to most mouthbrooders I think except for a handful of them.

Also, have you tried separating them using a transparent divider or something? Let the pair get accustom to one another before introducing them. Chances of success would be higher.

Anyway, just take my advice as a pinch of salt if you've thought of these mentioned possibilities before.

    Sp Antuta second attempt

Hi Shi Xuan.. Maybe the first gone up the lorry maybe due to my mistake overfeeding bloodworms 2 cubes per day.
These unimac species can really eat alot. Until their stomach bloated. Now better the male colour started to come out and no i did not seperate both the male and female using divider.
    Appreciate your advice.
    Cheers

Oh, you should try to cut down on their feedings then. Betta can be gluttons at times so it's best to keep a close observation on them. When I'm not breeding the adults, I give them less protein rich food and may even starve them for a day or two.

If you're using live feeder prawns and mealworms you might want to watch the fish closely, in case they cannot handle the chitin of these critters' outer shells. Like what Shi Xuan said, Bettas are gluttons, regardless of species.

With bloodworms, if the frozen cubes were contaminated, any presence of bacteria can cause serious issues for your fish. If the cubes look darker than usual, don't use them.
