thinking of trying out shrimp keeping

hi all bros, wonder if you all can help, i have a 2 by 2 feet tank was thinking of making into shrimp tank. i can only use fan and will want to use a sponge filter. any low tech plants and where to get them? cause i read sometimes there is pesticides etc which can kill my shrimps so is there any place tat sell safe plants? and also wad shrimps is recommended? thank you very much in advance will sincerely appreciate all help.

Imho, the best plants for shrimp tanks are moss... lots and lots of moss.

Moss provide plenty of hiding places and grazing area for shrimps and shrimplets. They are also very easy plants to keep with minimal requirements.

If you are new to shrimp keeping, start with RCS (red cherry shrimps), they are generally more hardy than CRS (crystal red shrimps), then gradually gain experience from there.

Yeah, CRS require lower temperatures so you'll need a chiller for those types of shrimps (along with more specific water parameters too)... that's one of the reasons why i currently only keep RCS, they can live in a wider range of temperatures and water conditions.

From my experience so far, aquatic moss are usually pesticide free as they are grown underwater, unlike plants from most LFS which tend to be grown emersed at plant farms (its much easier and faster to grow plants emersed, and those are more likely to have received pesticide treatments).

Your main concern for moss will be unwanted "hitchhikers". When you get a mat or tub of moss, wash it well with clean water and then soak it in a clear plastic container for 2-3 days, monitor it to look for snails, worms or any other pests that happen to come with it. Once you see that there are no more pests, then you can put it into your tank.

The shrimps you want to keep are those higher price and more sensitive types. Chiller and strict control of water parameters are required. Chiller, test kits, water parameter controls will punch a hole in your pocket. However, all hobbies requires some investments...the choice is yours but be prepared by reading more about care of those shrimps.

You can hunt for simple java moss and aquatic plants in AQ's marketplace thread. Those plants sold by members are generally pesticide free( i doubt members here will spray pesticide in their aquarium).

Moss from shops are generally OK for me so far. Look out for those emerse grown plants... Those are the main suspects laced with pesticide

Generally moss are your best bet in keeping shrimps, i started from moss too then exploded into 3 planted tanks...wahaha

What can perhaps help you classify shrimps as easy-keeping or not is to look at their species? Like caridina vs neocaridina. Shrimps in the caridina genus are harder to care for that require chillers and more attention to water chemistry like pH, TDS and GH levels. (CRS of whatever grade/ Golden shrimp, etc.) Shrimps in the neocaridina genus are easier and require lesser attention.

Perhaps visit websites like planetinverts.com to read up a little more. However take note that most websites are not 110% reliable. Just keep coming back here to bring up your questions and i'm sure we would love to help you out!

I'm sure you are able to find a species of shrimp thats perfect for your intended setup.
