Any experts on the behaviour of apisto please elighten. I used to keep african cichlids but gave up on their agression and constant movement of the substrate. Apisto, being cichlids, have the same behaviour? i have hair grass in the tank and if they do then all my hair grass will become frogbits.

Apistos are good community fishes to begin with. There are no real aggression towards other tank mates. Aggression only occurs when they are breeding. But, not to the extent of killing all tank mates. Some slower fishes may suffer, but most of the time, they are just chasing the tank mates away from the breeding site or fries when they are herding them.

Many of us keep apistos in planted aquariums. I used to keep A. cacatuoides in hairgrass too. No issue at all with them in planted aquariums. They do sometimes dig a hole under the wood or rock to lay their eggs. Never in the open.
