Shrimps at System and Control Engineering

I went to System & Control Engineering at Boon Keng Road and found that most of their display tanks had some little shrimps in it. They are almost transparent or translucent and with a tint of black line. Mr Tan said they are good algae eaters and won't attack moss. Unfortunately he is not selling it at the moment as he intends to breed more. He is unable to say the name of it except a chinese name, which means literally - "black shell"

Can Anyone who has been there recently let me know the name of this shrimp and where can get it?

    Thanks

Thanks spinex. Are malayan really such small size as cherry shrimps?

They are not Malayan shrimps. They lack the dorsal stripe and their morphology is different as well (e.g. less stumpy body and relatively lithe and longer limbs). From what I have heard from the shop's owners, they come from Taiwan.

Based on my own experience, they are about the same as Yamatos in algae eating diligence, although their much smaller size means they have less of an impact. However, they are very very prolific. Mine are in a heavily planted 100 cm tank with plenty of hungry barbs and rasboras, but I see shrimplets and gravid females grazing amongst the plants all the time.

Thanks Budak. In fact, their characteristic of "same as yamatos in algae diligence" is exactly what i am looking for because i have moss in the tank and do not want yamato to destroy them. If Mr Tan can keep these shrimps in the display tank, i believe it has been proven. Unfortunately, he is not selling to me at the moment.

Got mine very long time ago la.... Mr Tan regularly revamps his tanks, so usually when he's just done that, a lot of shrimp go missing and some time is needed for the population to recover.

I did not know they are not Malayan? I thought they were. Hmm interesting.

But the main attraction are the mosses...

For those who are interested, I think the shrimp is in the market.

Saw them in colourful being sold as Taiwanese Malayan Shrimp.

Not sure if it is the same. Price wise it cost the same as malayan.

I asked the boss of Colourful last week. He said he didn't know what is 'Hei Ke Sia'. I told him the shrimps are from taiwan and he showed me a green coloured shrimp in his display tank and said it was from taiwan. He also showed me a bag of Malayan shrimps and i did not consider. I would kick myself if that was really the taiwan "black shell" i had been hunting high and low!!!!

Just a word of caution, juvenile malayan shrimps may look similar to black shells.

Does anyone know where else is selling?

Here's a picture of the shrimp I got from colourful.

Perhaps those who are good at identifying it can give us an ID

Justikanz, like to enquire how are the Taiwanese Malayan Shrimp doing? Are they so-called Black shell shrimp?

    Thanks!

as far as I know, these are two different shrimps. the "black-shell" shrimp I was shown long ago is rather small (smaller than malayan) and really just greyish blackish colour.

the ones you see being sold in C328, quite similar to malayan but without the dorsal stripe, and sometimes greenish/bluish in colour, is a southeast china/taiwan shrimp Neocaridina sinensis.
