Chiller Flowrate

Hi all,

I would like to know what can happen if I were to connect a canister filter of lower flowrate as required by the chiller flowrate?

Any recommendations for my 2215 on a 180 litres tank?

Depending on the chiller brand, it may have start stop problem. The water inside the cooling chamber cold faster than it can be replace.

Is your tank planted tank? In my opinion 2215 flow rate is too low for 180 liter.

Besides the 2215 on my Juwel Rio180, I also have the original Juwel internal filter operating
Seems like in the long run, chiller will go hay-wire

ok so you have another filter.

Another thing that I read from the Chiller manufacturing web site (can't remember which one). The minimum flowrate specify is to prevent the water inside the cooling chmaber from freezing .

The workaround for slow flowrate is by using external sensor or external temperature controller. The sensor or controller will measure the temperature inside your tank instead of the temperature at the cooling chamber. However this may not solve the freezing problem assuming that it is can happen.

Serious? Freezing? It shouldnt freeze if the temperature is not < 0 degC

It probably can especially around the coil when there little flow. Never experience it my self but I think it is possible.

Also, waste of electricity if you are under-powered. By the way, for 4 feet tank, the best is to buy a 1 HP rated chiller. 1/2 HP is a stretch if you have 3 MH happily shinning on top.

I read from some website that if the flowrate too high for the chiller, the chiller will have frequent "kick-in" cos water flow out too fast without really chilling the water. So higher electricity bills & maintenance cost.

Just bought my CL280 for the 180 litres setup with my 2215. Currently set the temp at 26 deg C. Realized that there is frequent "kicking-in" and then chiller goes into standby mode again after chilling for only 2 to 3 minutes. Is this normal?
My submerged thermometer stick on the tank glass also showed 26 deg C.

This is not normal.

CL280 = 1/10 HP only, correct? 180 litres = 3x2x2?

You will also have to consider how hot that your tank can get from your lights. Also, tank with internal or external canister filter will generate some heat

Hi barmby, it's a 3x2x2. Filtration is 2215 & internal filter with lights & hood cover.
Before chiller, temp can go as high as 32 deg C.
Thought that when I set my CL280 at 26 deg C. The chiller will only kick-in when water temp in tank exceed 28deg C.
Am I right?

Mine 5x2x2 with Teco 1/2 HP kicked in around 27C when set at 26C. And my chiller work very hard with two MH 150W and 4 PL 55W

I believe 1/10 HP is under for 3x2x2 (My view)

My guess is yes. You can try borrow power head from friend and try it out.

Bioplast should be able to help or if you are handy you ca also get component from sim lim (Acez Instrument Pte Ltd, #B1-3. You can either by the temperature controller or if you have electronic experience you can get the sensor only.
