Hi to all expert out there, i am thinking to get a oto for my shrimp breeding tank to take care of those possible tiny creatures floating in the water. I have never seen a oto LOL . so just need to ask how big will they grow to. I think there are many types of oto, which one should i buy to serve the purpose ? Anyone knows NA aquarium has it ?

A quick search on google will show you load of pictures for otocinclus. Most of them grow up to 5 cm on the average.
Here's one from AQ's gallery taken by V31.
Those from Nature Aquarium will serve you fine. Usually they have Otocinclus affinis or Otocinclus vittatus.

oh dear...5cm ? that is monster looking beside my shrimps....
oto is vegetarian, eat algae inlcluding algae wafer, it won't it your shrimps baby but it will eat the shrimp food.

Buy a small one. I got mine about a year ago & the size still remains more or less the same as when I purchased it. I don't think they grow big that fast, unless you feed them with fish food (algae tablet)

As far as I know, Otocinclus does not feed on anything other than plant matter growing on surfaces in the tank, like the glass, driftwood, etc.Originally Posted by skysky

oh...how about those very small white dot...thingy found commonly in the shrimp tank. I think they are harmless as they are so small( half a mm ?). I also had them in my previous shrimp tank...but i hope can get rid of them in my new 2 ft tank.
white thing? water flea? put some small boraras like Boraras brigittae. That what I did in my tank, so far never see them disturb any shrimps baby even though I feed them only 3 times a week.
Otocinclus. spp won't grow huge, at least the ones in my 2 feet tank doesn't.
Maybe that picture of the close up, is giving you ideas? haha!
how about copepods / pods / cyclops ?
"spp." is short for species. Scientific abbreviation accepted by the academic community.
If you need something that grows only up to 3 cm. You can try the Parotocinclus species. There is one from Peru that grows up to 3 cm only.

Well, personally, I don't find any issues with Otocinclus having frequent treats like frozen bloodworm or tubifex. Mine are doing extremely well. I feed them these like about 3 times a week, but of course, I have plenty of algae for them as well. I know of one other aquarist who share the same observations as well.
So in my opinion, I don't know, they may not be just strictly strictly herbivores. But then, it could depend on the species as well. For example, from Planet Catfish, O. flexilis is mentioned as able to take frozen bloodworms.
