Hi all, I've been wanting to keep L270 for quite some time now.

Q1)But I've read somewhere that it is banned or going to be banned.

Is it true? If so, will the price go up like L046?

Also, I read up on how to care for hypans like L270, and this is what I gather:
    they like strong water currents.

    they are mostly carnivorous.

Q2)How about bio load? do they crap alot?

Q3)And I've seen alot of people using sand as substrate. But will they accidentally eat the sand and cause impaction?

If all is well, I'll get ready the pleco caves!

Q4)And also, can I keep it in my planted tank with tetras, dwarf cories, otos and apistos?

sorry for asking so many questions but any help is greatly appreciated...

Better to ask question before you get the fish IMHO.

Q1)But I've read somewhere that it is banned or going to be banned.

From what I hear it's a blanket ban on export for all Hypancistrus species from Brazil.
I do think those species from the Rio Xingu will be in more dire straits as the dam is being built there.
I can't say for sure about the L270 but if you like them no harm getting them ASAP!
You never know what politics and big business will throw at you next...

Also, I read up on how to care for hypans like L270, and this is what I gather:

IMHO strong current is not really required.
    Some current is desirable though.
DO (dissolved oxyen) level is more important.

    they are mostly carnivorous.
    Yup!

Q2)How about bio load? do they crap alot?
From a size perspective it won't be a huge problem.
I notice most small plecos (like Hypancistrus) have small intestinal tracts.
You can tell from the diameter of the feces.
So you shouldn't face as LARGE a problem as the big pleco keepers.

Q3)And I've seen alot of people using sand as substrate. But will they accidentally eat the sand and cause impaction?
No really a problem for most animal unlike humans.
You should know which useless organ I'm talking about here...
But you do need to maintain the sand by shifting it occassionally to avoid compaction of the sand.

Q4)And also, can I keep it in my planted tank with tetras, dwarf cories, otos and apistos?
It's been done before so it's not impossible.
    Check-out gene's pleco tank!

    Thanks for the reply!

I kept endlicheries before, so I was worried that the plecos crap around the same amount as them!

Anyway, these are my last few questions so bear with me for a while.

1)Is the L270 from Xingu river?

    2) Are hypans capable of uprooting plants?

    LAST QUESTION!!!

    IS IT PLECO SEASON??!?!!

    no worries about the questions.
I'm sure some lurkers will benefit from your asking too.

1)Is the L270 from Xingu river?
Check the sticky in this section ---> here
Complete with picture so you can't miss!

    2) Are hypans capable of uprooting plants?
Haven't seen one do it yet.
But the caveat is newly planted and small plants are very possible.

    LAST QUESTION!!!

    IS IT PLECO SEASON??!?!!
Yes and I believe at the tail-end hence the suggestion for you to get what you can.
Otherwise it may be a long wait to next year.
If source is a problem you can check with our member SCOPE for L270.
He may be able to assist in this matter.

I have started a sighting request thread for L270 in the LFS Sighting subforum so that important husbandry information of the fish is not deluged by sighting reports.
    http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=46232

Anyway, plants that are tied to wood like Java fern, Anubias etc should be safe. Echinodorus spp. are tough and popular with pleco tanks. Fine leaved plants like riccia, Hemianthus callitrichoides etc may present a great challenge.
