sadness fills when I heard that Chile got hit by a 8.8 mag earthquake, few hours before that Japan was also hit by a 7 mag earthquake... something is seriously wrong with Mother Earth

It seems like the quake effect is still on going. Hence bad news might still be coming in. Japan have evacuated 10,000 people for a warning of 3m(9ft) high tsuanmi.

Japan has been hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off coastal area. Tsunami alerts has been off after one hour at 50 miles east of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Quake is felt at Ryukyu Islands. Hence temporary no risk. I just visited Japan Meterological Agency, confirmed alerts just went up again. http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/

People who wants to follow the earthquake news. Let me show you a way how technology has gotten us into. This is updated via the seconds, hence your browser just need to be on.

    Re: Hawaii on Tsunami alert

Good point Eviltrain. If earth quakes had to stop then we should all be very concerned as then there would be something wrong with Mother Earth! Without tectonic and volcanic activity this planet would die.

Earth quakes are more likely to happen this time of year as the mass shifts from the South to the North pole. Pressure on the earth's crust is released in the south and increased in the north. As consequence tectonic plates are prone to move where previously they didn't. More of the S. hemisphere ice rests on a continental land mass than in the N. hemisphere meaning that the Antarctic effects tectonic activity more than the Arctic.

At least i score A in my 'O' level Geography.
But hope that all this will calms down. Just hope the polar shift won't happens in this generation.

    Re: Hawaii on Tsunami alert

eviltrain, Tyro I understand too since I also studied geography hence know about plate tectonic movement. But looking at the Worldmap, it is rare that you get earthquakes that shakes on the left, center, right. The stress release in the center is much lesser due to land mass hence, that means subsequently there will be bigger ones in the center than the rest.

The most significant impact now is that because US is getting crude oil (of lower grade than middle eastern countries) from Chile whilst the rest of the world rely on Chile for copper extraction. We will see these prices rising in the short term. It is not just motorist that will be affected. Commoners like you and me with consumer products such as PC, Laptop, etc will be affected as well. Taiwan I.T. products manufacturers is the first to feel this effect.

    Re: Hawaii on Tsunami alert

Extracting oil also has effects on the Earth's crust. Hurricane Katrina causes so much damage to New Orleans not because oceans have risen but because New Orleans has been sinking! Because of the mass extraction of oil in the Gulf of Mexico the land has been sinking (kind of like sucking the water out of a water bed). This change in mass distribution can also cause tremors. Given the complex inter-connected nature of the earth and its physical processes, a small tremor can trigger a bigger earth quake. These effects are still unquantifiable and largely speculative.

It is interesting that there was first a quake off Okinawa (along the Pacific Rim of Fire) and then one in Chile which is also on the Pacific Rim of Fire. I also find it interesting that all the "sinking islands" are sitting on the central plate ringed by the Rim of Fire.

This is a marvelously complex world. I can't image why people would use drugs for entertainment/excitement. The natural world is so amazing and stimulating---unless you live on a fault line. This is bluddy terrifying and far from pleasant (but surely not boring).

    Re: Hawaii on Tsunami alert

Well, what is terrible news is that Singapore itself, will face ElNino Effect hence the heat spell that we have now, will carry on until May. So that is the killing part.

    Re: Hawaii on Tsunami alert

all these sinking island are form by hot spots between 2 tectonic plates. when lava solidified, it becomes the islands. But Hawaii is something different, somehow the tectonic plates below Hawaii is so thin, plus the hot spot, creates the 3 main island of Hawaii
