4mm would mean about a 30 to 35 L tank max, so why not? Using small plants you should be OK.

As long as the tank does not leak, it should be ok.![]()
my tank is 2.5ft by 2ft by 2ft....is it able to withstand the pressure with the sand added in???
Thanks for the advice.....

I think 4mm is a bit too thin. Just my thoughts.

Hey man,
I think the fact you're asking this question already implied that you know it's probably unsafe.
Although many of the hobbists here are well-informed, I doubt you can hold anyone's word to the safety of the tank, unless they promise to help you clean up should there be any mishaps (trust me, you don't want to go through all the uprooting, removal and washing of gravel and in the worst case, mopping up, damaged furniture)
I have a 3x1.5x1.5 tank of 4.5mm thickness (about 190 L) which I use to keep cichilds and I am worried about the 11 kgs of crush coral I have in it.
You probably need about 20-30 kgs of gravel to have a decent substrate level for your tank? Given the amount of work that goes into a planted tank, it is definitely good to err on the safe side!
You used the tank previously as a breeding/quaratine tank?

I second Eric. My 2ft tank broke open in the middle of the night one day after I ignored a hairline crack in the glass.
I'll never forget the loud crack, the horror of water, soil, fish and shrimp everywhere.
Safety first.
if my tank break, I die . . .not of sadness, but because i am sleeping 10 cm from my 50g, facing my bed.![]()
I've got a pretty new 3X1.5X1.5 feet braceless with 12mm glass all round; and while I was assured by the tank manufacturer that 12mm's sufficient, I'm already worrying whether it can withstand the pressure of its contents. Maybe I'm paranoid?
Either way, your 2.5X2X2 feet has an even larger capacity than a 3X1.5X1.5; and 4mm in my opinion is indeed much too thin.
4mm is just too thin for anything othen than a betta barrack. you have to factor in the occasional accidental knocks by the decor and gear.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
