Keeping snail? what is the purpose of this snail?
Well, there is few reason people keep snails. Some people like shrimp, I like snails.
Some snail do eat plant, but some are not. Nerite snail is pretty good in controling alga, those stick on the glass, green dot dot one. Beside that, they also do some decorative to the planted tanks.
Well, I got pretty much large scale of number of apple snail. They eat plant and grow pretty fast.

Oh how does nerite sebra snail look like? I guess i cant keep snails as i have many loaches. loach eat snail. initially got snail attck in my tank after i put in few loaches, Now Not a single snail in my tank

Interesting snail you have. Wonder what is their max size? Some people say loach wont eat that type of snail. I also like to know will they eat up riccia or moss? Do you have such info?

Well, depend on what kind of snail you looking at. If you are talking about apple snail, they are plant eating machine! Wipe off everything within minute time!
But nerite they will not. Planted tank friendly. I got two in my planted tank, they only eat those alga on the glass, max size is bout 20cent coin size. I got carpet plant, something like hc, riccia, hair grass and moss. They are OK!

zebra snails rocks.
they dont infest your tank like other snails do...
and they are very good at eating algae. really effective.

Whats the requirement for Nerite snails? I have tried to keep them on 2 occasions but they failed to survive....

requirement for them to survive? hmmm... i think someone else should be better qualified to answer this... but i do know they dislike low pH and nver put snails with loaches. other than that, mine are pretty hardy.
Yup, agree with stormchild. They prefer higher PH and avoid puffer also.
They will not breed in your tanks, mean easy to control. But never keep them in low temperature, something like 24'c or below. Snail are hardly to survive in low temp. Beside that, they are OK.
Ecoculture had them when i visited them a few weeks back. Have 2 of these cute snails in each of my tanks. They seems to do ok although one of my tanks are at around 5.5-6 pH and running at 26 degrees.

i have around 8 zebra snail with me.. is it those orange/gold shell with black strip over the shell? i got it from c328 at 50cents each.. not sure what is their requirement as i need some snails to beautify my tank.. been 5mths and none of them died.. IMHO, they are quite hardy and about to take any water quality.. i take them as my water quality tester.. If your water quality is poor, they will stay somewhere above or at the water level, that means time to do water change.but if your tank have carpet plant like HC, hairgrass etc.. they tend to disturb the plants in some of my newly set-up tank.. a portion of HC came up floating which upset me as i took lots of effort to plant it.. now come the effective anot, i not very sure for i surely know they won't eat hair algae and those light brown patches on the tank..

i heard that zebra snails need brackish water conditions to breed...that's why they don't take over freshwater aquariums.
i have a freshwater aquarium with 7 purchased zebra snails, and one new and growing baby zebra snail! and it appeared quite long after the purchase, so i know it didn't come along with the others.
what does this mean, if anything?

not at the moment, but i could take some. may be a while before i spot the baby again though...it's still pretty small and can be hard to find in a 30 gallon aquarium. but i know it's a zebra snail for sure because it has become big enough to be able to see a couple of stripes...and the shell is the right 'style'. definitely not a snail that came in with a plant or something.

If the picture is the nerite zebras mentioned, then the scientific name is probably Neritina natalensis from South Africa.
Unfortunately, there isn't much detailed information around, but literatures on the Internet seems to mention that these are freshwater snails. However, I suspect that they may be adaptable to brackish water conditions as well.

One thing that is most possibly true is that these snails are gonochoristic, and not hermaphroditic. This means that the snails have distinct sexes and need a male and a female to mate.

This is probably why most were not successful in breeding them, whether in freshwater or brackish water, fuelling speculation that they need brackish water to hatch. Your experience seems to be contradictory. So, it may just possibly be that the snails in their tanks are all of the same sex.
Regardless, it is hard to conclude anything since there aren't any scientific authority or sources to confirm. Hopefully, more aquarists could share their experiences on them as well.

The PH in my thank is about 5.8 to 6.2 is it ok to keep the snails???
