Yes use those dwarf puffer fish but once the snails goes into hiding, they attack shrimps.

Snails hide in the plants that you buy in lfs. Before introducing the newly bought plants into the tank, I would soak the plants into diluted bleeched water 1st to rid of the snails. So far I have minimum problem with snails.

Allow me to repeat that the best way to control snails is still to limit the amount of food available to them... That way, you do not have to worry about problems like loaches not doing their supposed work, loaches destroying your scape, puffers eating your shrimps, puffers eating your smaller fish, puffers tearing the fins of bigger fish, finding new owners for puffers who did their jobs and overstayed their welcome, anti-snail medication destroying your bacteria and shrimps etc...

Simply reduce feeding to feed only once a day... And feed enough for the fish to consume within 1-3 mins... That's good enough...

if you are lucky, you might be able to get a dwarf puffer that is not so hostile, like mine got a pair , male and female at C328 and i have never seen it attack any other fishes, like oto white cloud mountain and yamato shrimps. they only bother about each other though. now i hardly see any snails, but they seems so be feeding on worms lying around on the gravel.

i find loaches more effective than puffers...

you can do a snail trap or buy a snail trap.

avoid dosing chemicals and over feeding.

This is simply the best solution although it may take much longer to see the result! Not to worry that feeding once a day is not sufficient. It will make your fishes more active.

My fish are greedy buggers. No fish food ever touches the ground.Even the bottom feeders come to the top to fight. Yet I still got MTS by the zillions? It only slowed down when I added one of those sand loaches. Do snails eat stuff like fish poop as well?

The snails will relish the unprocessed food that comes out with fish poo as the fish eats too much... I had seen live tubifex worms pushed out of my fish's other opening as they gorge themselves... Fish CAN be greedy as they are opportunistic feeders, genetically built to eat when they can as they do not know when will the next meal be.

In fact, feeding once every 2 days is a good option. Feeding only the amount the fish can consume in 1-2 minutes.

I used to have snail problems... But restricting food access for the snails mean they will do their own population control... And it works...

Glad this topic came up now as my snail population is under control, i say under control because i do not mind a few snails. The types were the usual ones and also trumpet snails, i was'nt keen on using chemicals to kill the fish and adding a fish to kill them had its problems as well. I have changed the way i feed the fish and use a bottle type thing to catch them. Excess food is the real key to how much the snails breed, now i feed mainly live food and if i feed other types i make sure all excess food is removed
and death will have no dominian
