    LED doesn't need ballast.

So how is the warranty, how long is the expected life?

As i have highlighted to Jervis, I've always regarded LED lights to be good to have, but it isnt necessary when you are trying to factor in the cost savings with the initial high cost.

    so....

It comes with 1 yr warranty. If you compare buying T5 tube + e-ballast, then the start up cost will be a better comparision.

As for how long it will last. Will go and ask

Just asked today, he said more than 10 yrs.

5 yrs will definitely save alot of money. For me, 3-5yrs will be good enough for me.

    Some updated pictures.

Glosso seems healthy. Some new leaves growing. Hopefully they will stay horizontal, rather than vertical.

Riccia is sprouting out of the wire mesh too.

And since my shrimp tank is sharing the same light, it is causing green spot algae growing on the shrimp tank

was told by chan that this LED lighting last more than 10 years. but best to change at the 10th year.. because once it reaches about 10 years old.. the lighting output will reduce to 90%.. which is still usable..

Have to end the test on the LED light early. Coz my new tank had arrived

    Here are the updated pictures.

    http://picasaweb.google.com/ghimsia/2ftLEDLightTest

    Current verdict:

    1. Light is strong and clear.
    2. Stem plants and mosses grow very well - of coz mah
    3. Glosso on open area are creeping. Glosso blocked by stem plant, growing vertically.
    4. Riccia doing pretty well - given sure a short time.

I do feel some drawbacks for LED light.

    1. Shadow - this is very obvious = blocked means blocked, no/low light
    2. Coverage of light - once the light is blocked, it will not penetrate through leaves.

So using of LED lights may be a drawback for people who love layered style of aquascaping.

Any idea on the pricing? BTW do you need to purchase with the housing to use the LED tube or you can just buy the tube and fit onto any housing?

The 2ft LED tube price is stated above.

No need to purchase the entire light set. For example, if you have a 3ft light casing, you can replace the tubes with 3ft LED tubes.

If it cant penetrate through leaves, then your planted tank would be in trouble soon... Algae / leaves below dying / etc ... ...

I'm quite puzzled on one thing. A merchant contacted me and told me that LED can produce those ripple effect which a MH lamp does. Any idea what cause those ripple effect? Because if it can create such effect, why isn't it powerful enough to clear dark spots?

I don't think the Led could last 10 years that long. Maybe 2~5yrs the most, they will get dimmer as the time past.
