My changing water only took me around 10-15mins. I spend more time on maintaining the scape, like trimming, arranging soil, cleaning up the glass, siphon the debris etc etc... I dont care on the PH change as Singapore water actually pretty good for keeping aquarium. Just add anti-chloramine solution before top up, thats all. Those discus shop, they change water like nobody business, the water change is like few times a day sometime to keep them healthy.

    Re: anzai's 1ft tank

I've already cycled the tank for 3-4 weeks.
Don't seem to be a problem with the ANN cycle.

They seem to have some kind of rot starting at the fins, which then migrates to the body. I haven't changed water regularly, just been topping up water treated with Genesis.

The population has largely been decimated, it's been quite heart-breaking.
Hopefully, the remaining survivors will hold on strong.

On another note, I've had a Yamato Shrimp crawl out of my tank and committed suicide. Any idea what's the reason behind their seppuku?

If I am to go on explaining about my seemingly "unnecessary" water change method... I would've been seen as defensive, especially when I am outnumbered by 3 to 1

However, every owner has their own way of interpreting their love towards their pets. Therefore, it's a matter of how much effort (and how necessary) we think our pets deserve our time and effort.

Is it a coincidence that rotting fin is one of a few symptoms for fluctuating/incorrect pH level? I will let you decide.

I am seriously hoping to help you as I can feel your pain when you use words like "population been decimated" and "heart breaking". I know how it feels.

As for those experienced hobbyist, perhaps they can be more helpful by helping you find a solution. We are all here to learn.

    All the best

I suspect the Yamato is reacting to chlorine or/and chloramine in the tap water.

    Tell us more:

    1) How much water did you change (by percentage) and how frequent?

    2) Your method of water change? You treat the water first? Or treat the water inside your tank?

    3) Which brand of anti-chlorine/chloramine are you using right now? Are you following the recommended dosage?

It isn't exactly 3 to 1 because I'm using your method for acclimating newly bought fishes over 8-10 hours, with 20mins 10ml of main tank water into the LFS plastic bags. So your method works as well as I haven't had casualty since the longest of time.

Its just with water changes, it regarded a more hassle / problem free approach, namely as Peter has explained, no deaths from PH due to co2 injection with a scenerio of 7-16 days of aged /treated waters + when we do our water changes, the parameters remain consistent every week. High PH mix with low PH -> after 2-3 days; Mid PH -> end of week low PC.

Anzai, not doing water changes regularly and treating the water with medication is enough to kill alot of fishes. Topping up water doesn't dillute but increases concentration if I recalled, though not proven.

Having fishes/shrimps jump out of your tank is a good sign of bad water condition.

If you want a low tech, stick with low light requirement plants and 1-4 fishes in a 1FT and when i mentioned 1-4 fauna, i dont mean neon tetras. Go with hardy fishes like guppies/platies.

Overloading your tank, adding medication and not performing water changes = bye bye for all your fauna.

Trust me, most of us been in your shoes before, you just have to understand that aquascaping requires dedicated time. Like some bros said candidly a long time ago, just treat water changes like washing your face in the morning before going to work.

By the way, my 1FT HC nano takes me 3-4 hours of maintainance per week.

Hmmm, I too was taught that water change should be done in intervals when changing more than 50 percent to avoid PH shock. Very interesting topic we have going on here, looks like with daily CO2 added, our fauna may have gotten used to the PH swing?
