Anyone know where to get good and cheap peltier cooler. diy also can, but i dont know where to get the parts.
Kaichin Electronics on the 3rd floor of Sim Lim Tower sells several different wattages of Peltier element.
They also sell heatsinks, thermal paste and fans, or you can try any of the other shops on the same floor.
They are horribly inefficient devices though, you should really consider a compressor based chiller for your tank.
Even if its a 1 footer, and especially if its larger than 1 foot.

In our climate, refrigerant base chiller are the way to go. Fast to cool down the water temperature to your needs.

i thought peltier is cheaper and more quiet? If I just want to cool a few degrees, wouldnt a compressor be overkill?
compressor based chillers only use up energy when kicking in to cool the water.
TEM chillers run 24/7.

I wonder why they did not put temperature controller on TEM chiller.
peltier is not cheap. if you diy, you'll need a heat exchanger, heat sink, power supply and fans.
during operation, a peltier based cooler is quieter when compared to a chiller.
you should be looking at the amount of heat being removed. a few degrees in a 2 ft tank is different from a few degrees in a 4 ft tank. on top of that, while heat is being removed from your tank through a chiller, your tank will absorb heat as well.

a thai-based supplier that has quite a comprehensive offering
getting a heat exchanger is the main issue here. aluminium and copper is not recommedded but most heat exchangers that are available off-the shelf are made of these materials. so chances are that you'll have to customise. look at water-cooled cpu coolers used by over-clockers for inspirations.
after solving the heat exchanger issue, you'll need to design the mountings to clamp the peltier and heatsink to the heat exchanger. then mount the fans to the heatsink.

USE thermoelectric cooler, energy efficient <-- dont know to trust or not. haha . compressor sounds like a good investment. but damn huge and noisy, dont know where to put.

looks like i have to use liquid nitrogen cooling or stuff the tank in the fridge.
ha ha.. Buy a display fridge to store your tank. Wine chiller too.
I am using this chiller.. But a compressor chiller is much MUCH more energy efficient. The lowest compressor chiller is rated at 1/20 HP. And if I am not wrong, (please correct me in this thread if I am)
1 HP = 745.7 watts
1/20 HP = 37.285 watts
37 watts compared to my chiller which runs at 150 watts. And a compressor chiller brings down the temp much faster than a thermoelectric chiller too.
seems like compressor is the way to go. what's the smallest size compressor?
