Hi, I'm new to this aqarium stuff and english isn't my first language, so please bear with me.

I'v always been facinated by biospheres, the concept about a selfsustaining system, that only required light and heat, but the scale was so small as I want huge aquariums as biospheres, where big schools of fish can live in an endless cycle.

Maybe you skilled guys can do what I have no experience in, putting a big biosphere together, and ofcause aqua scaping it.

    Thanks.

Biospheres that are perpetually self sustaining are not really possible.

Even the best biosphere, planet Earth, is not self sustaining and is being steadily poisoned and depleted.

That doesn't really compute, earth has been around for millions of years, only when humans began our big commercial heavy industrial exploitation of earth's resources, it has been in decline.

But NASA invented some decades back some mini biospheres, with shrimps and some plant-stuff, which could sustain itself for years under good conditions.

    HexHammer,
Bio Sphere is just a marketing gimmick. Even those living human size BioSphere that NASA made for planetary colonization does not work well with good computer calculations.

You can read up a bit more about Ecospheres here: http://www.petshrimp.com/hawaiianredshrimp.php

Also, experiments in sealed ecosystems (with human populations) conducted by NASA have not succeeded to date.

Hi, I think what they are trying to tell you is basically what you are planning to do is not possible.

i believe sustaining such biosphere without our intervention, like topping up water, cleaning the filter is not really that possible...but i could be wrong

    Re: Big Biospheres?

Unless the biosphere is very big and the bioload small, it is very difficult. It can be very hard to find a good balance, a better idea is to design one which can be unsealed if you find something wrong with it, to rectify the problem.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and he will drink beer while getting sunburnt.
