Hi guys.. I would like to know what are everyone's opinion of placing Yamato shrimps with CRS..

My main reason of adding in Yamato is to eat away some hair algae which seems to be always having some spores hiding somewhere.. Although I know that Yamato snatch food from CRS but I can add in more pieces to balance it..

Just don't want CRS to get bullied by the newly introduced Yamatos..

I dare not to put Yamato with my CRS as I heard they will compete for food with CRS.

malayan can handle hair algae too... and they do a better job than yamatos especially when you are feeding shrimp food.

    Oh really???
So if those black shell shrimps selling outside are Malayan shrimp family, then can I just get those to feed on my hair algae too?

Only Malayan & Yamato shrimps eat hair algae? Are they really efficient in eating them?

Not sure about the black shell shrimps. Malayans are usually colorless/brownish when sold. I'm not very good at identifying them so I usually just check the price. Should be around 20 cents a piece for less. Got mine from NA.

Mine are very efficient eaters but then, I don't feed them anything else so they have nothing else to eat if they don't eat the algae. I prefer them over yamatos. They're smaller so less disruptive to the scape.

$0.20 a pc? That's cheap.. But how do you don't feed them without feeding the others? Malayan shrimps don't snatch food? Do they cross with CRS or Snowball?

My CRS eat all my algae.
They eat everything especially dead sulawesi shrimp.

I add snowball before, all die.
Just checked my PH, it was 4.9.
    CRS can still survive.

Alvin - I don't feed the others as well. Let them go hungry for a few days but mine are not expensive CRS.

Malayan don't snatch food like what yamatos do, take and run away.

From what I know, they don't breed with CRS or snowballs.

Re: Pros & Cons of CRS & Yamato

In my experience, yamatos are still the best algae cleaner. I think if you have enough hair algae in your tank for the yamatos to eat, they might not bother about your CRS and snowballs.

It's not really a lot of hair algae.. Just some dangling here & there...

And during feeding time, if Yamato snatch food, then they will not even bother about hair algae already..

I think the best way to know is to try it out. Think maybe you try to get 2 small pieces of yamatos first. See how it goes. Most probably should be ok.

According to this sticky and chart on post #8 by Shadow, will not cross with CRS.

    http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...-the-same-tank

This one from planetinverts also shows will not cross breed with CRS but yes for snowballs!

Just to be very safe, just do yamatos la!

It shown on the chart that malayan should not be mixed with any of the bees and tigers.

It means big NO NO NO to your tank.
