I found one dead this morning and took it out, it was all soft. I know it has moulted as I found the empty shell it left behind. Then tonight, came back from dinner and found another shrimp dead with its body all soft with another empty shell

What is happening? What can I do to prevent them from dying after they moult?

There is something wrong with your water quality, sometimes its because they did molt for a long time and shell becomes to hard and when they molt they would get stuck while moulting and die.more experience bros will tell u more about it.

Bro Crsfrenzy correct, you can try to add some powder/solution for helping shrimp to moult.

Thanks. They manage to shed their skin as their little bodies were found further away. You could be right that they are completely exhausted and unable to survive.

Bro just don't anyhow add things to your water before finding out what is the problem. Might make things worse.

Went to 328 and ask auntie if they have some powder to help the crs to moult, she shook her head!... hmm.....
so, didn't get anything in the end. There was another casualty this morning... same thing. Otherwise, all the others seemed ok.

Sis, for supplement to help moulting (please make sure your shrimp died because of unsucessful moulting, do it with your own risk) you can buy BORNEOWILD SHRIMP SUPPLEMENT - VIGOR.

From my experience in c328, auntie and uncle do not have enough knowledge of the shrimp product.
But actually they are a distrubutor of borneowild product, so you can get vigor in c328 for sure.

Its very much advisable to get a Test kit so that we can know where problems might lie at.

Your set up is the one that you posted weeks ago? Did you do any water change prior to this moulting problem? Did you top up water to replace your evaporated water?

    Apologies, sis.

Suggest you get a GH test kit at least. If your water is too hard it will cause moulting problems.

Other than that, U could also get Mosura Eros. It works wonders. But just to check if you do regular water changes and is there any rocks in your tank that is causing the water to be harder than usual?

Re: Help - CRS dying after moulting!

you need to get a GH test kit to measure your water's hardness.
looks like your water is too soft since you see empty shell.
water soft means they can molt easily, but after molting, they are not able to form new shell quickly and hence subjected to external bacteria/virus attack.
on the other hand, if water too hard, the shell is hard and they have problem molting. In this case, you might see dead shrimps with half molt shell.
recommend GH is 4 to 6.

Re: Help - CRS dying after moulting!

wow... looks like I have to go shopping for GH test kit.

Sword: Your diagnosis seems to be most accurate about them moulting and not able to form new shell. The bodies of the dead ones were all soft.

Jiayuan: I only top up with aged tap water to counter the evaporation. I've been doing that since day 1. Never knew CRS so sensitive.

Binnez: I did add driftwood which I soaked for more than a week with daily water change. I wonder if that could be the problem...

I do want to thank all of you for your invaluable advise. I'll go and get some GH test kit tomorrow and see if the water is too soft. Meanwhile, I'll be doing more research online Thank you once again!!!

Bro Yulbrainer, I think you should not recommend a product that you don't know well and it poses a risk if it is not used properly. Vigor should be used when shrimp condition is at best and not when unsuccessful molting happens.

Beside high GH which bros has mentioned here, low GH can cause death after molting. Low water quality caused by high ammonia/nitrite/nitrate can cause molting problem. Some poor anticholorine can cause molting and cause them to death.

Re: Help - CRS dying after moulting!

Its best to add in some anticholrine & BT-9 to when aging the water. Also constant topping up of water without any WC will lead to an increase in GH too. Somemore your tank quite small i believe, thus very small changes you made may actually lead to a huge impact that is beyond our eyes.
High gH and low gH both isnt good for shrimps. Alot of work to do :P

Try and get the pH test kit too if possible.

It is call sharing knowledge bro, although my knowledge consider very shallow for your standard.
I suggested it base of my own (or should i say my friend's shrimp tank) experience.
    Peace bro

Its always better for TS ( thread starter ) to post the water parameter whenever they encounter problems in their tank.

For those newbie who just started, get those strips test kits as they cost much lesser than the drip test type.

test results always works better than looking at the problem without any test kits.

Totally agree. Without the proper information, the solutions provided is just like a surgeon doing a brain operation on you just based on looking at your shaky hands. You may just be cold but he thinks you got nerve issues, hence OPERATE!
