Is it the rattling of the HOF with the tank itself?
you can slice 1 side of a air tube and slot over the tank(where you place your HOF ) this way it will dampen the rattling sound.
Hi,
Checking if anyone used GEX HOF before and had this experience? I bought a S size one and find it pretty noise. I got a change from the LFS within 3 days of purchase and the replacement is better but only for 3 days. On the 4th day, the noise of the propeller comes back again.I washed the whole HOF to ensure no particles inside but still have the noise. Anyone can help to comment?
Anyone know of a quieter one with the same space for media and the good design of the outlet to ensure no waterfall effect on the soil below?

It's normal. My Gex fan does have that annoying high whirling sound as the motor spins. I used a variable adapter and set the DC output to 9V and the noise is much lower now.
LOL. My bad. Hang on Filter wise mine was silent. I decomm my Gex one though. When I turned it off for maintenance then turn it on after, the propeller was turning but it took very long before it started drawing water again. The time before the water started flowing was the only time the propeller makes a lot of noise![]()
i have this problems before and apprently i give up and now keep in my store, never use it.
I am using GEX Slim M type with 3 filter compartment. There is a small round disc that can be inserted into the bottom of the GEX body to centralise and prevent any vibration thru overhang. You can adjust that round disc to ensure that the filter is balanced. I adjusted mine and that stop any vibration. There should be no noise coming from the impeller which is submerged when it is in operation. Noise is through vibration.
Just my thoughts from using the GEX Slim.
Sorry, I know the initial noise when it is starting and pulling up the water. That is not the noise I am referring to.
I am referring to the noise made when the filter is already functioning....
Might have the something like fine sand in the filter, will open up and clean the propeller and see if it will get better.
i have thee of these gex HOFs.
First check is to make sure that you have inserted the intake tube with the propeller fully into the HOF. Second is to adjust the lever that controls the amount of water output.
To avoid splashing sound, filled the tank water level to the adjustable outlet flow level.
Hope these help.
I believe GEX hof are generally nosier. I am using the Aqua clear HOF and its very quiet and flow rate is good, it also comes with build in propeller which you can dismantle to maintain and wash. The only setback is the price is comes with but overall i will still recommend it. It also has quite a big compartment to store medias.![]()
Gex old model(non-silm) is noisy. The silm version I very quiet as it's motor is outside it's filter compartment and in the tank instead..

There was a fellow hobbyist who reported a defect with his GEX HOF, which made a rattling noise when in operation. It was caused by a loose fitting cover as he found out. You might want to check that before doing anything to the impeller. Take off the cover and compare the noise before and after.
If the impeller is not sitting right, or there is trapped air within the chamber, it will cause some rattling to occur.

Hi Hi... I just bought a Gex HOF (Power S) few wks ago and i am facing the same problem too. Got it change with the LFS but still having the rattling sound from the impeller...Quite disappointed =( Can hardly slp well at nite as my tank is in my bedroom.. Can anyone give recommendation for a good quiet HOF? and hopefully not too expensive =)
Liberty 100 is a good silent HOB filter , think it's about $35-40(can't recall the price)? Am using one and it's one of the better investment![]()
