will tank size be of concern too as my pair spawned and eats up the eggs everytime , as it is a iq5 i only put more plants ro let the male hide. any advices too?? sorry to hitchhike thread

The IQ5 is too small for a pair to successfully raise their spawn. In general, a 2ft tank with lots of hiding places is the bare minimum for a pair to raise their fry to maturity. The problem with the IQ5 is not only the size, but the dimension. If it was a long-ish tank, adding extra plants may work, but definitely not in a cube-like tank. Apistogramma are territorial by nature, so the larger the floor space is, the better. They are not too concerned with the depth of the tank.

For a breeding tank, pencilfishes might be better alternatives to tetras. Tetras tend to be better predators of the fry.

Thanks bros for all the advice, sadly I think the female has ate the eggs as I see the male being very unhappy with her and attacking her. Hopefully, in a month's time she will bear eggs again then I will try again.

In the meantime, maintain good water condition and feed them well. They will reward you eventually, sometimes when you least expect it.

If the male is extremely aggressive towards the female, it might be a good idea to keep them separated for the time being. The female will not be back in breeding condition soon if she has no peace while trying to feed or rest.

I guess they are the same as the GBR. After losing the fry, my male GBR keep chasing after the female for mating or blaming her for the loss. I immediately remove the female into a small guppy tank and feed it with Brine Shrimp and other food. After about 1 week, I put the female back and the male chased her again, but this time she is ready to spawn, and within days, I saw another pool of egg again.

It has been 3 weeks since I last updated I think. Some great news the apistogramma borelli and agassizi spawned again.

Haha, but its kinda funny because I saw the female in the cave today with the male. The next thing I know after my 1/2 hr nap the female was chasing the male around. Curious, I went to turn over the cave and I saw eggs abt 30 of them.

My worry is that the female will eat the eggs, will she? Since I think I might scare her by over turning the cave?

In addition, since is it okay to leave the male with her in the same tank but separated by a glass divider?

The divider will work as a temporary measure, however, any fry that escape into the father's partition may get eaten.

I think I need to separate my inka 'pair'. The male has been very violent with the 'female'.
Good to separate them for a week or two, can also help find out if it's a sneaker male.

The father is a fire red, the mother is a tapajos. Some forumers may find this offensive, but I am just experimenting to see if I can get a both features into one fish. I really fancy the two different strains

Hmmm not too sure as only this male is growing exceptionally fast, the rest of the them are much slower. Traded some of the fries when they were young, but it seems that those that were traded are also not showing colours yet.

Seems the result of the crossing is inconclusive unless you compare the largest male with his male siblings. So far it seems that the fish in the picture is not exhibiting the pattern in the tail of Tapajos males. Since the Fire Red is a result of selective breeding, it seems the gene for the uniform "orange" tail is dominant over the Tapajos tail pattern. Was this the result of a Fire Red male to Tapajos female crossing? If yes then you should try the reverse, might get some different results.

Yep Stormhawk, it a fire red male with a tapajos female. Hehe just got a fire red female, will try my experiment again.
