Filter recommendation

Hi all,

I'm about to start scaping on a 1 feet tank (36cm X 22cm X 26cm)
I am thinking of using the Eden 501 that is sitting around.

Will the flow be sufficient for the tank?
It will be a heavily planted tank and im concerned that the flow will not provide a good enough circulation in my tank.
Or is there any way i can maximize the flow like using different filter medias etc.

Hi there, suggest you get a Eheim 2211 if you got the budget. I use it for my GEX S and its just nice. Do take note that once your filter is stuffed with media, the flow rate will reduce a bit.

Thanks for the advise! I have already put out a Want post, hope to get a cheap second hand one! =)
I was just hoping that the eden 501 can be put to good use rather than sitting at a corner in my storeroom.

You can use the Eden 501. Although the filter is good, I find the media storage very limited and the flowrate drops within 2 months of usage. Furthermore, the filter have to be on the same level as the tank.

My money's all on Eheim since I loved this brand from ages ago. One thing you should take note is getting double taps for the Eheim since cleaning could be a hassle without them

The Eden 501 is one of the best filter designs around, by virtue of its spacious and versatile twin compartments alone, unlike single compartment canisters.

Its alright to have the filter on the same level as the tank, as i go extra space. I worry more about the flowrate.
I love Eheim too! I have a 2213 myself and it works perfectly.

I do agree that the eden 501 is quite a good filter. However, I have used it for my previous set up and the flow rate slowed down significantly. Is there anyway i can improve the flowrate? Should i use other filter medias to fully utilize the 2 comparments and improve the flowrate?

Usually the slow in flowrate means you have to clean the filter

No matter what media you add, the flow will reduce a bit

IMO Eheim 2211 far better than Eden 501 eventhough both have the same flowrate. Eden 501 need to be clean every 2 weeks otherwise the flow will drop drastically. Eheim 2211 on the other can last months before need any cleaning.

I also believe that the Watt consumption is different. Don't remember but i think Eden around 3W? while 2211 is 5W

That is the source of why the Eden 501 slows down after sometime. Motor cannot provide enough strength to substain the said flowrate.

IMHO: the Eden is a very good filter for the size. When it comes to larger tanks I rather use larger canisters.

This is a great question.

A filter with good-sized compartments like the Eden501 is ideal for using as a stand-alone bio filter by filling both compartments with bio media, especially since the motor in this particular model is not that powerful. The advantage of doing this is that the bio filter will be able to handle a heavier bio-load at a given flow rate.

Then one can always use a more powerful separate unit ( eg. a powerhead with supplementary filter attached) for the dirt-filtering job.

Cool! i never actually thought about that before, thanks for sharing!
However, i would like to have minimal equipment for this tank as its a small one, so i guess the Eden 501 will just have to stay in the corner of my storeroom for a while more until i have a bigger setup.
