    Re: Types of arowanna

RTG = Red Tail Gold... It's body scales are gold, but the fins are red.

    The rest no idea.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

asian arowanas are generally categorised into 2 broad categories: gold and red.
    RTG is red tail gold.
Red 2 is Grade2 red. 1.5 Red is also Grade2 red. grade 2 reds do not turn red in adulthood.

for RTG, the body scales will only become gold up to level 4, 5 max, never full crossing. generally the fins are red but the dorsal fins are typically darker or even black.

Other than colours, you may want to consider the shape of the head. There's spoon-head and bullet-head. RTG's tend to have spoon-head. The traditional Red's tend to bullet-heads. I'm not sure about the Red 2 and Red 1.5.

Personally, I like the RTG because the spoon-head and dark top makes it look more fierce, as a dragon should.

May I know what type is this (saw in another forum):

Is the redness due to the light? Not my fish though, I just like its colour & this pose a lot.

Suggest that you go to the various arowana shops and check out the adult fishes... then you will really see how the breeds will turn out and what you like. You can also go Qian Hu and check their arowana gallery. There other places too.

To me, large fishes like arowanas are like "real" pets, like cats and dogs with relatively long lives as opposed to small fishes. Choose one that you will really like.

    Re: Types of arowanna

there are many other traits to look for when it comes to getting an arowana, such as:
    - breed (RTG include HBRTG and SHBRTG, G1 red, G2 red, XB, Green, Silver, Afro, Pearl)
    - spoon head vs Bullet head
    - normal vs short-body (also known as FFL or Fa Fu Long or King Aro)
    - YTL (Yi Tiao Long) which means the top line of scales are all single scale and aligned in a straight line
    - GH (Gold Head) typically only seen in quality XBs
    - crossing typically only seen in quality XBs and adult Reds
    - pearlies only seen in XBs
    and much more.
take the time to go to a few LFS and farms to shop around. arowanas can live up to 20yrs, it should not be an impulse buy.

this is a G1 red. pink/red lighting is usually used to enhance redness of a Red Aro. but if you see this photo carefully, u will realise the tank edges in the background are white/bluish so i reckon the photographer took this under white/blue light. which means the colour you see on this arowana, is it's true colour.

depends on which farm you are getting the red from. even within Reds, there are difference in quality and hence pricing. i've seen prices ranging from $380-$1888 for a juvenile arowana.

you can try getting black arowana from Y618. if you are referring to african arowana, then that's abit harder to source.
albino silver arowanas are not commonly sold. think of it as a "limited edition" fish for now.

But even at the higher-end price range, when I get these "G1 red" at their juvenile form, the colour will not be this superb, no?

Just asking to satisfy my curiosity; I don't think I'll be keeping any arowanas soon

spot on. at juvenile stage, the colouration of the scales are not developed. the only signs you can look out for include: red finnage, long pectorals, red lips. there's a saying that red keepers are patient keepers. the reason being scale colouration will only start when the fish is 2-3 years old.
