I bought 20 red cherry shrimps yesterday, and after acclimatising them to my tank, i added them into the tank. My tank is quite planted, and i made sure there were hiding spots for them. I also have 20 guppies and 3 platy inside. I read up about the fact that guppies and platies don't attack shrimps, and so yesterday i stay glued to my tank to see whether they would disturb my shrimps. Apparently, the fishes don't even bother about them. They stayed away from each other. So currently, i can spot only 2 out of 20 shrimps. So my question is, what is the likelihood of my shrimps dying?
    how do happy shrimps behave?

below are pics of my tank:

Hard to say, your tank is fairly heavily planted. Cherries can hide very well. Please check the GH of your tank if you want to keep shrimps. The rocks and substrate don't seem too suitable as it may raise GH.

Oh! Alright i will. I'll go Google up the suitable Gh value. Is a gh test kit expensive?

If there are new it could be they are hiding. Give them a few days to get use to the surrounding.give it some time,be patient and monitor. If they are dead you should be able to spot bodies.

You tank has alot of dense plants growth, so it'll naturally be rare to see many of your shrimps at once.

Wherever there are covered areas and niches, most likely they are hiding there... even if one dies, the rest will quickly consume it and you wouldn't even spot a trace of evidence anyways.

Oh... they just need to get used to it? Alright. I'll monitor them. Just that its a pity because they're so pretty!

Hahahhhaaha. You're not making me feel any better! But I'll cross my fingers!

What about fertilizers? i need to get kh and gh reading first before i can plan a proper fertilizers regime right? Im using seachem flourish, and i just follow instructions on the bottle. Would it affect my shrimps?

The KH value is normally used in tandem with PH to check the amount of CO2 that should be dosed. As for GH, it is more important for the shrimp to moult.

Shrimps are very sensitive creatures, whatever fertilisers you use make sure that they do not contain copper. It is good to follow the instructions on the bottle or even slightly under dose.

Hello! I haven't gotten around to checking the GH yet, but i think it should be fine. I just saw my shrimp consuming his own moult.

    uploadfromtaptalk1362146609077.jpg

That white thing is his own skin. By the way, i realised that my shrimps are turning darker. When i bought them, they were kind of transparent.

So now they are all darker red. Is it possible?

Shrimps get stressed during transportation and when newly introduced into a tank, so they usually tend to lose color or become transparent during the process... once they are acclimatized and feel safe, their colors gradually return back.

Oh ok! Such a drastic change! Thanks! I was also reading some of the threads, and there were posts about culling some of the shrimps. Is it a must?

Culling of shrimps is usually done by shrimp breeders. They basically weed out and separate the "lower quality" shrimps (ie. color not up to standard or got undesirable physical characteristics) from the higher quality shrimps, so that they can breed the better ones to hopefully get even higher quality offspring or specific colors.

Unless you are concerned about breeding shrimps to get a certain color or quality (or you only want the best looking shrimps in your tank)... there isn't really a need to cull.

Thanks bro! One more question! If i don't cull, the lower quality ones would just breed, and i will probably end up with a tank full of transparent cherry shrimps in the long run right?

If you don't cull and just let nature take its course, depending on the ratio of male/female shrimps with nice coloration vs less coloration, you'll usually just end up with a tank of mixed quality shrimps, some with nice coloration, some with less coloration, and some with interesting color variation too.

Note that the male shrimps tend to be more transparent and exhibit less coloration than compared to female shrimps, if you cull all of them just based on color, you might end up with only female shrimps in your tank, so have to check carefully.

Totally agree with bro Urban Aquaria. Bought some sakura shrimps from c328, realised that all are females. Even after months of having them I have no babies. The Sakuras are probably cherry pickings. Thus, don't just selectively cull the duller looking ones since most of them are males.

Alright then! Though its really hard for me to sex them, even when i keep reading forums on how to differentiate male and female.
