Hi guys, im looking to get a new filter and light to restart my 35cm nano tank which had failed miserably the previous time

Filter im actually looking at eden 501.. the current filter im using is actually a HOF previously used for my 2ft tank. I felt its abit overpowered and my tank was like a washing machine. Will eden 501 be good for tank of this size?

For lights, i do not have much of an idea what to get. Im looking to grow some glosso, downoi and fissiden moss. Can anyone suggest? My budget would be around 40. Can stretch to 50.

高手 please advice what kind of light to get ~ read that the wpg rule doesnt apply to nano tanks

One more question! Is eden501 easier to clean compared to HOF?

Re: Lighting and filter for 35cm nano tank

I am currently using eden 501 for my 1 feet shrimp tank. Performance wise good flow ( depend how far apart are your tank and filter) and relatively quiet.

To make cleaning easy you might wanna consider buying ehiem or other branded filter connection taps. Eden 501 in original configuration doesn't have these taps. So when you want to clean simply off the filter, lock the taps then remove the filter ,no issue of leakage. Cansister cleaning wise easy mostly just rinse the black sponge with tank water.

Why is it hardest? Unless it is multi tray (media you need to monitor) or you have algae in the motor. Can share your reason?

example for hof/sump/ohf ,for regular maintain, you just remove the filter sponge to rinse/clean or replace it and its done , canister involve more steps but it got the best clean look in your tank which lily pipes can be use

Sorry to ask what what are the other things you need to do? Except maybe check if the bio ball(media) are still intact not broken into pieces, replace any Seachem stuff such as Phosguard if needed.

Because so far seem these are the usual things to do unless the filter itself is having some issue. Am i miss some crucial step? Thanks.

Hi, thanks for all the input! Have decided to get a eden501. Want to try something different from HOF. I guess they both have their pros and cons

Any advice for lighting? Im looking at UP aqua pro z series led. Is it value for money? Or would a aquazonic t5ho 2tubes be better for plant growth

Re: Lighting and filter for 35cm nano tank

    If I may,

The eden 501 is good in it's own right but as other threads have stated, it clogs quite easily, reducing flow a considerable amount. Had it on my 30cm and all I can say is,clean it every fortnight. It's no hassle as it's small compared to the eheim canisters.
That being said, if you plant heavy, then the flow in such a small tank doesn't matter as much to me in terms of algae control. I had a small HOB in my old 30cm that was heavily planted and all I got was slight GSA.

The Z-series is good for what it is in my opinion. If your tank is normally sized, i.e. not too tall, along with a significant substrate depth, it works well. Urban Aquaria has used it successfully many times as documented in this forum.
I had the 36cm version and plants did quite well. Changed to the Green element 3W LED set just to try it out.

Hey thanks! In the end, I decided to go for the cheaper option, Aquazonic t5ho due to other unexpected spending on some unnecessary things.

Don't buy aquazonic if possible mainly because the light set itself is not good. If you go for 2 tubes most people will find often 1 tube does not seem to be able to light up. Save up a bit more to buy something better, saves you some trouble later.

Omg really?! I have this problem also with my 2ft aquazonic light. 1 of the tube needs to be turned on and off a few times before it will light up. And I thought im the only one with this issue. Damn..

Nope common issue. You experienced before but still want to buy aquazonic? Might as well buy a better one to start off with.

The X and Y series are lower powered clip-on LED lights, seems to be more for viewing fishes rather than for growing plants.

I just got the z series and i must say it really looks good!

Before that i was contemplating the other types too. But after looking at urbanaquaria and others comments on the z series. I decided to save up to buy it!

    Information Regarding Z-Series

From the specification sheet, the 36cm version runs at 10.7W.
I agree it's a good light. And runs alot cooler than the Green Element one. Only downside is mine runs with a purplish/pinkish tone
