Enquiry: Maxspect Razor 420 120watts LED (8000K)

I am currently using the Green element 3W per led light set now for my 2 ft tank.

Considering upgrading to the maxspect razor after a recent review by a forumer. However a few questions to ask:

1) How long can it actually last? assuming 9 -10hr per day use
2) If one LED spoils, do I need to change the whole panel? How much does that cost?
3) My tank is 1.5ft high. Can I hang it like 30 cm from the top of the tank? Will it still be sufficient depth wise for light coverage?

Thanks in advance. 500-600 a pop must ensure i know what I am getting myself into. The current lights work fine just that hands are itchy

I am using a Green Element 3w + Up Aqua LED x2 for my 2ft tank. The Green Element is great value for its brightness but I also noticed 2 things:


(1) I find that the Green Element doesn't light the left and right edges of the tank that well.
(2) I put the Green element all the way in the front of my tank in order to try to get my foreground carpet to grow, but it makes it inconvenient to feed the fish... so I can see why a hanging LED might be more convenient....

But one issue I have with a high hanging LED like the Maxspect... when you are looking in the fish tank, doesn't the glare from the LED get into your eyes? For the Green Element, I have stuck a piece of black cardboard on the front so that the LEDs don't shine in my eyes when viewing the tank.

Wow, you really have a lot of lights. I am currently using the 30W 1.5ft version on my 2x1.5x1.5 but i place it vertically. I have 2 sets of 30W LED. So far no intense bubbling but some plants do pearl a little. This leads me to think maybe lights are not intense enough.

The glare from hanging lights is indeed a concern but aesthetically, it looks superb.

Which light does not give you glare?
I look at my tank mounted lights, also gives me glare when i view the tank from some angle.
Bioplast MH lights blinds me while i drool at the moss.
My own LED wall mounted same thing..

I think its the angle of viewing. if the best angle is for your eyes to be below the lights, then prepare to be blinded... hahaha.

Taking the above photo as an example, if I look upwards, I will not be able to see the bulbs of the Green Element 3w with a piece of 1" black cardboard pasted on the side.

On the other hand, if it is a hanging LED or any LED that is mounted higher up, the bulbs may be noticeable unless there is a rather large hood. (this will be influenced by tank height and viewing angle). For example, the photo of David's tank with the LEDs clearly visible. Its a question of peripheral vision, some people are able to concentrate on the centre point of their vision, others (like me) will be distracted if there is bright light source at the periphery of my vision.

The main source of lighting for my whole home is cove lighting as I like soft diffused (but bright) lighting.

Ok back to the question. The razor lights. Are the panels changeable and are they expensive ?

The Maxspect has not been around long enough to answer for for sure how long it will last. Best guesstimation 2 years ...there about?

All I know is the Maxspect LEDs are in cluster format 90 degree lens that gives very good intensity that can rival the MH. So if your tank is 45cm and hanging another 30cm is not an issue. The question I will pose to you is that with a dimming function you can adjust intensity to reduce consumption unless your intention is to have plant-out-of-tank look.

The LEDs are from either NEC or Philips. Look at my Maxspect thread. I post the specs up.

I have asked DeLighting and yes the LED clusters can be replaced. I am more concern of the Driver More than the LED itself. Yes, the Driver can also be replaced.

As to how much is the replacement cost, I am not too sure. You could call DeLighting and check?

Each cluster is an led pad that costs $50+ to replace. I replaced my 16000k pad with an 8000k one recently for my razor nano

$50 plus sounds reasonable. Every 1 plus to 2 years replacement means about 120 - 150 bucks per 1.5-2 years. I think I ll brace myself for the new addition. Looking forward to buying one in Nov/Dec during my break.

I'm eyeing another Razor 8000K for my new home project tank too Once I get that, I'll own all 3 versions/wattages of the Razor haha!
