    Re: Seachem Excel

SeaChem Excel is meant to be a fertilizer. Excel dosage would just worsen the green water.

More frequent water changes and perhaps a slower flow rate would help to get rid of the green water problem. Recheck if the flow rate for your UV filter is at it's specified optimal level.

My UV filter solved my green water problem over night and I am now considering if I should sell my 'almost' new UV filter.

Agree with Muar_Chee - recheck flow rate for your UV filter. Make sure its not too fast else the UV light won't have time to kill the algae. Generally, the slower the better.

It does not have any macro nutrients (Nitrogen, phosphate, potassium) in it which are usually major contributors of algae.
Excel is primarily organic carbon with trace elements. The active ingredient for killing algae is Glutaraldehyde. Excess excel can trigger inbalances but I think it should be OK to add it even if you inject CO2.

I would also reduce fertilization, light intensity/period, feeding to reduce nitrates/phosphates during this period.

With UV running your green water should be cleared within 48hr.
How big is your tank, what is your pump L/h and what is the wattage of the UV.

    Re: Seachem Excel

Its possible to kill suspended algae like green water with Excel, but you will need to really heavily overdose it to see the algae-killing effect (not just dose a little bit).

Excel is a toxic chemical at higher concentrations, so you'll have to be very careful when overdosing it in a tank with livestock, as it can kill or cause long-term health damage to fishes if they are exposed to elevated levels of the chemical.

    Re: Seachem Excel

Excel is an algaecide. It is supposed to get rid or keep algae at bay. It only acts as a supplement for CO2 and does not really function as a fertilizer.

Your best bet is to continue running your UV lights and at the same time, turn off lights for 2 - 3 days to see results. Should suffice with these 2 measures.

I used Eheim Reeflux with no problems. I think it is worth the premium price in exchange of more assured results and lesser worry.

tskyleth, your water volume is huge. You got to factor that in when you are getting your UV filter.

    Re: Seachem Excel

    422...that is a big tank.
I would connect the UV direct to the main tank and bypass the sump tank.
How long have you used the UV bulb?
