Hello, some advise needed here. I am new to keeping shrimps and always facing problem with aquarium parasites like mini snails, seed shrimp, worms or panarial ( All the white dots in my picture). Is this an indication of overfeeding? My tank is in A4 size with light on from 3pm to 12am. Only shrimps (CRS and Cheery) and mos are in my tank. I notice also algae grow very fast on the glass. I bring in a horn nerite snail but still need to clean the glass once or twice a week. What should I do next to get rid of these problem? Stop feeding for week and reduce the aquarium lighting?

how much do you feed each time and how often? sounds like you may be over feeding, You can also reduce the lights to slow down algae growth.

I feed them once a day and make sure they can finished it within 2 hours as instructed. This problem always surface each time I restarted the tank. Restart here means cleaning the tank. Throw all the plant away. Soak the soil in hot water hoping to kill all the parasites. =P

Ah ok, i think the issue is 'restarting' your tank is killing all your beneficial bacteria... why do you restart the tank ?

Hehehe.... I restart everything when I can't take all the small little white parasite in the tank. But this problem surface again after few weeks I restarted the cycle. Something unbalance happen in my tank but I don't know what. Can it be my tank is over stocked? Actually the red cherry gave birth to many fry but majority of them die off before reaching adulthood. Can it be too many dead shrimpslet in my tank while I keep feeding the tank? I plan to stop feeding the tank for a week. Hope that the para rails die faster than my shrimps. Hahaha...

Any fish takes pararial as meal while won't harm my shrimps?

My favourite prevention method against snails would be chilling the water. I think the reproduce slower at this rate. Not sure if it helps to deter worms and other parasites but Snails are the only pests I have ever come across in my whole fishkeeping experience.

Could consider getting assassin snail to take care of your snail issue. Personally, for me I find snails provided variety to the diversity of the biological system in a tank set up.

I brought a horn nerite snail to tackle the algae on the glass. For the pararial and seedshrimp, I have brought a rainbow badis to handle it. Now pararial and seedshrimp seem to be controlled, left over the snails problem. Will assassin snail do any harm to my nerite snail?

As Nerite is of comparable size to Assasin, I will not take any chance if I want to keep my Nerites..

Just keeping one horned nerite snail tends to have minimal effect on algae on the tank glass and plants, you will usually need more of them to see improvements. Its all about numbers and teamwork.

For reference, i usually keep around 10-15 horned nerite snails in each of my 2ft tanks, i find that only at those numbers then can see the algae cleaning effect. Its still not 100% algae clearing, but can greatly reduce the frequency of manual algae scraping.

Assassin snails will usually hunt the pest pond or ramshorn snails first, though eventually they may try to hunt the nerite snails too (nerite snails have a hard operculum cover which they can close up, so got more protection). So its just something to take note of.

10 to 15 horned nerite snail in a 2ft tank. That is a lot. Do you experience with rainbow badis? I wonder how many I can keep in my 10L tank.

For algae issues, could also keep otto, China Hillstream Loach, and Plecos.. I keep 5 species of snails in my 4 ft tank..

Though of that before, but as my tank is mini, don't know how to handle it when they grow up.

This is what I rely on battling the little worms.

Well, horned nerite snails are small so each one only eats abit of algae at a time, its just a matter of stocking enough of them to keep up with algae growth.

Since your tank is only 10 liters size, maybe just try adding another 2-3 of them, that should improve their overall algae clearing capability.

Rainbow badis are good micro-predators, i've kept them before and they do help to keep critter populations under control... just 2 in a 10 liter tank should be sufficient. Though its still not a 100% elimination solution, worms and critters can still hide and increase in population if they multiply faster than the fishes can eat.

Btw, those fishes also do snack on newborn shrimplets too though, so maybe not as suitable if you are breeding shrimps.

Urban Aquaria, just popped over to your website, very nice site..

I happened to get a couple of Thai Micro Crab as well and only one of them made one guest appearance in the last one week that I have them.. Interesting mysterious creatures these are..
