    Hi everyone,

My UP Aqua LED power adapter has melted, see pic. How shall I replace it myself? Can I cut it out and connect to a 3pin plug?
Do give me some advice or intro me people who are knowledgeable in electrical.

    thanks in advance

    Hi JKCS

please do not cut the adapter and replace with a 3 pin plug, your LED will blow!!
the is a AC to DC adapter, please look at what is the output of the adapter, preferable bring back to LFS and ask if they sell spare parts, if not look for a compatable AC to DC adapter to replace it, make sure the output voltage and current matches the one that is burnt.

If you recently bought this, please bring back to the shop and ask for an exchange, most likely it is a defect...
If you have used it for quite some time, then too bad, have to look for the adapter.

    Hi Fireblade,

thanks for your advice. I am not able to change to another AC to DC converter because it is just one piece, meaning from power adapter to the light via wire.
nanyang trading only give 1 month warranty, which has passed so cant look for them anymore but I have wrote to the distributor, hopefully they can exchange for me.

I am not trained in electrical so am here asking for advice from fellow forumers

    cheers

If the LFS is unable to fix it, another alternative is to bring it to the electronics shops at Sim Lim Tower, they will be able to detach the broken adaptor, match the right replacement adaptor and re-attach it for you.

thank Paul. like I said in another thread...you are indeed amazing..
can I look for people specialize in LED lights? the boss of the lfs said it is due to my socket but I don't believe as my timer socket plug is rectangular shape, once plugged in, it can['t even move.

What's your view on this? (don't worry, I won't quote your answer out) hahah

Most electronics and lighting shops should be well versed in LED lights, and the adapters and parts should be easily available. Just look for those who have lots of LED lights blazing at the front of their shops.

Btw, those round pins are not designed to be used directly with rectangular slot timer socket plugs, try using it with a travel adapter... for all my UP Aqua Z-Series lights on timers, i use travel adapters to ensure a secure connection (just get those basic $2 ones found at most hardware shops), otherwise even if it seems to fit on its own, the pins might get bent or damaged and end up loose inside the socket and it just sparks and overheat.

The travel adapters i use look like this:

Hey jkcs. Take a photo of the text on your adapter (if it shows the output voltage and current). I will be able to help you. I'm familiar with electrical and electronics, as well as DIY stuff. By the way, what is the wattage of your lights?

i beg to differ because it's very common to see multiple socket extension that allow easy insertion of the 2pin plug, so i believe it wont cause any melt down. just for general discussion. :P

Yes, there are socket extensions which allow the direct usage of 2 pin plugs, though when you use them with additional timer sockets, sometimes the fit isn't exact on the timer plug so when the contact is not so good it can cause issues. I have experience timer sockets with bent internal contacts causing the connections to crackle and spark during usage, so there are various possibilities.

Do check the individual sockets on the multi-extension and timer sockets too, i have used sets whereby one socket was faulty while the others were fine, so it could also be due to the individual socket issue too.

Though if you find that the socket is working fine with other devices, then its just the light adapter happen to be faulty and need to be changed.

That's a simple enough fix, but you need to know the DC output voltage and wattage. You could even consider adding a connector such that the light and adaptor can separate to facilitate installation
