    Hi bros,

Please pardon my limited knowledge here....

My question is whether we can breed between similar species of apistos but of different variant / collection site?

For example for the following Bitaeniatas:

    Ap.bitaeniata " Nanay orange "
    Ap.bitaeniata " Pirata Orange "
    Ap.bitaeniata " Rio Nanay Yellow "

    Thanks!!

Logically, they will breed if they are forced to select the one and only one of the opposite sex although they are from different locality...

But my personal view is that keep the strain pure... Why want to mix them and in the end you can only call it A. bitaeniata? And isn't the reason for buying from overseas is to get good colour strain?

    Agree with Valice.

As for the 2 Rio Nanay, it should be a case of different colour-form.
Not sure of the bit Pirata though.
It's NOT "Chee lick", NOT "Chee Chee Licks"!!! Cichlids is pronounced as "Sick Lids"!!!!!

No, I don't have the intention of cross breeding strains...just thinking if I can get another pair of Nanay Orange since I may not be able to find another pair of pirata orange? any suggestions?

Yorky: you're right, there's Nanay Yellow and Nanay Orange...

i believe romer mentioned in his book plus the article on possible different species by colour variation.
the female is the decider in sexual pairing.
if they are forced (i.e. only one male and one female in tank) they will do the nasty.
but the finding seem to support the fact that they generally pick the same colour variant as mates.

oh, another problem you might face is when you want to put them back into the respective pairs.
    females all look so alike!

    Any links to the article?

Can I mix between Nanay Orange and Pirata Orange? Because its quite impossible for me to find another pair of Pirata Orange...

Not trying to cross them but just providing a choice of mates so that one pair does keep breeding among themselves....

There should be no problems, you will be able to breed them.
Just don't ID the offspring as Nanay Orange or Pirata Orange. : )

But according to the paper, there is a possibility that different collection points are in fact different strains...

Just like a tiger got sumatran tiger, bengal tiger, malayan tiger and siberian tiger... They are all tigers with different colours but they are different... If you interbreed them, well, you probably get a all different type of tiger...
