How I achieved temp 25 Degree with the use of my DIY Fan

Dear All,

First of all locating the Tank location is really important for this to be possible.

What I mean.... The back wall where the tank is place must not be facing the sun it is best located central of your house with good ventilation. If the tank is facing the Sun it will be impossible to even achieve 26 Degree.

Then go to SLT to buy a 120mm x 120mm 12V high speed fan... costing is about $10 + a 12V transformer (can take from your old used item)

Position the Fan at an angle at about 45 to 60 degrees.

Base on a 2 ft tank size.

Follow by cutting a cupboard about 14" x 6" (Depending on your lighting height)

Use a alumin. foil to wrap the cupboard so that the lighting is reflected towards the water.



Reason for having the board is because when the fan is blowing towards the water access air is bounce towards the cupboard and air flow is send back to the water.

Notice after you do this method the temp in the tank will go down to about 27 degrees initially.

I used Bluetack to secure the Fan to the tank and rest onto the lighting casing. the cupboard is also using a Bluetack for the same purpose.



You can removed the item easily when you need to service the tank.

The next thing you need is a 1.5lt bottle wash clean and fill up to the max and place in the fridge overnight. Make sure the water is free from chlorine and etc...

As the fan blow overnight the amount of water evaporated is easily about 1.5lt. take out the water and top up into the tank and the temp will futher drop by at lease 0.3 degrees. Do that for afew days your tank temp will come to 25 to 25.5 degrees.

But rememmber not to over do it as it will caused your fish to be sick if you over do it.(Temp drop to quickly)

Effectiveness of evaporative cooling depends on relative humidity and air temperature. Singapore is quite cool recently.

Have you tried compare if you position the fan horizontal blowing directly at the water surface? I vaguely remember it was tested a long time ago by some folks on some forum/mailing list and this has the best effect. Maybe you can verify if this is true?

Lighting is still crucial in affecting the temperature. My tank, 2ft tank with 105W T5 and one tube is PL, highlighting, you can never achieve 26 temperature unless is raining day and very cool. I believe yours is only 4 tubes, using highlighting and try with 6 tubes and see the result, you'll be shock...

Wow 105W... that's power.... as it is with 96W I'm already fighting to keep algae at bay... Frankly for a 2ft tank high depth at 45cm I only need 72W..

Maybe this period is really cool. I'm still seeing 25.5 in the morning.

Green water... use UV light and it will be clear again.

you only achieved 25C due to cooler weather these few weeks and your cool water from fridge. fans can only bring down temp 2-3C cooler than ambient. when the weather heats up so will your water temp.
actually all these methods are common and widely discussed and used.
btw, bluetack is mighty dangerous to use in place of a proper clamp/holder.

it's ambient temp that's more of a concern. i.e. temp around your tank.
if your tank is placed in an area that's around 28C, getting water temp to 25C using fans is no problem.

hope your bluetack does not fail you.

cos your light is not "hitting" your tank glass?
up your phosphates dosage.

phosphates does not work, been doubling the dosages to 4ppm for 2 weeks. Green spot algae still growing. Isn't that bad, just use tooth brush to brush it before taking photo .

could be due to surface texture of the rock that the algae is able to gain a "foothold" more easily. anyway, i find it makes the rock look more seasoned and natural lor
