This is going to be the next generation of lightings to be used in planted tank... Now is no go, due to high cost in deploying. One bro in DIY tried on his 1ft tank already it cost $90 plus.

The clear advantage would be electrical bill you can save and also low or no heat emited from the led lights.

it is certainly interesting alternative, but at this point it is still relatively expensive (the NA one quite cheap though). I certainly open to the possibilities, just wait and see until it mature

    Re: LED Acquarium Lights

I have been using the 2ft LED light set - with 3 LED light tubes - since November 2008. Started with 2 tubes, afterwhich increasing to 3. The decision was due to the height of my tank at 45cm.

You can take alook at my tank's thread.

    http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=47816

    Yes, the advantages are :

    1. Low power consumption at 7.5W for each tube.
    2. Low heat. However, LEDs work better at low temperature.
    3. Life span of LED - over 50,000 hours

Price for this set is actually very attractive. You should had found out the price already

There are actually alot of LED lights coming along the way. One example is the type of high-intensity LED used by one of our forumer to DIY his 1 feet LED light set. Another one is a LED light set that can emulate metal halide and hitting a similar wattage at 270-300W.

You can do a search on LED grow lights to find out more

Bro, where did you buy the led lights from?

Roughly how much is it per tube?

I got it from NA. 2ft LED light tube is $55. So you can guess the price for the light set

Can show us a pic of the LED lights? Does it comes with a casing? My is a 4ft tank. So does that mean I need about 4 tubes?

Had actually did a post on it http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=47227

Thought you saw it at NA. You can either buy the tubes or buy the casing with tubes.

At the end of the day, it revolves around what your objective is. If you see what Ghim has written down from his experience you should be able to get a good idea of what you want.

For me, the low heat and low power consumption is key. I personally and I reiterate this is my personal view; is that it does not make a big difference either than low heat and low power consumption. Since I run a low light setup now the difference is almost - non existent.

Jervis did a aquascaping journal with LED lightset before, however i did mentioned that if its going to cost 3-4 times more expensive than the regular PL lights while saving less than 40 cents per month, you would not be seeing any returns until.........

High tech, but its just not efficient.

I beg to differ. The ROI is achieved faster than you think.

    You save more than 40% per month. For my case, 7.5W x 3 = 22.5W. This is less than 1/3 power consumption vs 24W x3 = 72W.

If you just count the number of PL tubes and e-ballast you need to change over 2 year versus the cost a LED tube. Your initial setup cost for the LED lights will be covered within less than 2 years.

If you only use max 36W of PL lights, then using LED is not cost effective. 2ft and above, the cost savings is more significant and ROI is acheive faster. I hope someone will bring in a LED light set with more red spectrum.

I must add, certain plants don't like the light spectrum of my current LED lights. I won't get very red, red stem plants.

After seeing your post, i believe at current rate, you save about $5.45 per month. Seeing that oceanus is retailing their 2FT led for about $160. Seems theres a way to recover and save since led prices are coming down. For 2FT and above that is, still might not be pratical if your interest revolves around nano tanks like myself.

It wasn't so cheap when jervis first posted these in jan last year. And Jervis did mention the prices were quite high for these Elos LED. Though they look extremely good on the nanos ones.

    Re: LED Aquarium Lights

Jervis is using the same kind of LED light (the one he posted in Dec 2 more recently) as me, bought from NA. The price is $55 for a 2ft LED light tube. I spent around $200 in total for the light.

Oceanus light tube cannot make it. Only 55 LEDs for 2 ft tube. I had tried it before. It is not even as bright as a 9w PL light. Pass it back to the seller after I tested it. Put it side by side my 2ft LED light with more than 500 LED, I cant even see the light emitted from the Oceanus light.

Elos LED light set, never it see before. But based on the picture. It does not look promising. Too few LEDs. And they are not using those super high intensity LED, these are used by the forumer who DIY for his 1 ft tank.

Frankly speaking, I would love to run LED for my 1ft tank. I still don't see any LFS actively bringing in LED light set for nano tanks. Even for 2ft and above, there are just 2 choices, NA and Oceanus.

Maybe I should find a factory in China that produce LED lights, and distribute them in Singapore

This one looks cool though http://www.reefbuilders.com/category...ment/ecolamps/

This looks good for 1-1.5ft tank http://www.ledwholesalers.com/store/...&productId=370

    Re: LED Aquarium Lights

Was surfing around and came across this link. A wholesaler that sell LED lights. Was wondering since there is a growing interest in LED lightings, maybe more LFS could bend together and work out a deal to benefit all.

Or perhaps some engaging members here who would be keen to take up the order and custom made these for our members. It could be a growing business ...

If there's an LED with the current 800-865k daylight for a 1FT, I would probably try to get as well. But i've seen oceanus light being publicise these couple of weeks, might want to highlight similar reviews like those jervis put up to either recommend these new products made available.

    Re: LED Aquarium Lights

Have to wait another 9 years 8 months to prove whether it really last that long

LED are stated to last 50,000 hours, 80,000 hours or 100,000 hours. I would be happy if this LED light tube last for 5 years.
