It's nice but then your tetra is going to become feeders for your arowana soon.

Not necessarily true. Some forumers have an arrowana planted tank established for a long time.

How did they achieve that? They must be lucky, as i heard arowana plucking the plants, uprooting it..... maybe the plants is the answer??

Well, TS please update on this one, very interested to find out more after few days....

But the small fishes you put in the tank are for arowana food??

I had one. You can search the forum for them. I have to dig my old photos out, but you can view these first.

Nothing to do with luck. You just have to start with a juvenile. If you try it with an adult arowana in its' old tank it will generally not like it.

There are a few more photos of other members planted arowana tanks in the forum. I also posted quite a few threads about my experience, including keeping small fishes with them. Others posted their experience as well. Just search.

    Re: Arowana Planted tank

I am not an Arowana person, so knowledge on this fish is limited.
But regarding keeping it in planted tank, all I can share is that
this is nothing new. I remember Sam Yick used to regularly
keep or displayed their Arowanas in planted tank, both at the
Pet Safari and also their Joo Chiat shops previously.

I believe all fauna are meant to be kept in planted tanks, just like in the wild. Nice effort!!

When I started, there was only about 5 known arowana planted tanks in Singapore, excluding Sam Yick's display tanks.

About 2 years later, there was about 20+++. And there are more that were not mentioned in the forums (i.e. not just AQ forums).

Anyway, I intend to set up another one. When I get a new place, probably in a few years time.

Search AQ for arowana, you will find a fair number of posts from members who had planted arowana tanks, describing their experience and set ups. There's a guy, I can't remember his AQ nick. He set up a community arowana planted tank. Not sure if he still has the tank.

    Re: Arowana Planted tank

i had 2 aro planted tanks, no issues. no matter what fauna you put in the tank, take care of the plants and your fauna will be fine.

aros being big fish will uproot plants when chasing smaller fish. so when choosing plants we need to bear this in mind. then we also need to make sure hard scape pose no threat to aro. scratches and bumps could lead to drop scales. at the same time, we also need to provide shelter for the aro tankmakes. like the discus in this tank, more echi plants like amazon swords or tall java ferns will help to provide hiding places as well as resting places.

also, you need to be aware that due to the lights, having a HBRTG or xback in a planted tank will make shine and crossing development to be slower. a classic RTG not so bad cos shine hardly pass 4th level. but then if you have a red aro, the lights could be very good source for tanning.

bottom line. learn to handle a planted tank first before trying to add poop machines like discus and aros.

    Hi,

You mean chaotar no good or? Cause if plants needs the light, then arowana cannot have strong lights, means gotta sacrifice one?

Sorry the questions as trying to learn more.

    Re: Arowana Planted tank

Depends on the species of arowana.

Basically, the arowana has 2 colours. The gold scales and a layer of pigment melamin over the scales. The golden crossback and RTG has brown pigment. The red arowana has red.

In the golden and RTG, we want the fish NOT to have any pigmentation, and to show the gold underneath. In the red, we want the red pigment to show up and gold trim around the edges of the scale.

The melamin works the same as it works in our skin. We tan under the sun, we produce more melamin and become tanned. If we hide from the sun everyday, then our skin produces less melamin and we become fair.

Soooo... ideally, a golden arowana and RTG should be fair (like a lady) and the red should be tanned (like a hunk). That's why a red is more suited to a planted tank, and it's not so great for a golden or RTG. Another good reason is that the green in the tank shows up the red arowana much better, whereas gold against green does not show up as nice.

Some people who keep golden arowana in bare tanks actually keep the tank lights off unless they want to view the fish.

BUT, having a golden under bright lights simply means that they will not be as gold (especially the top) as they could possibly be. There is no known adverse effect on them.

As mentioned by someone else, the RTG typcally do not "crossback", so it does not really matter if it's under bright light or not. (They naturally look hunky and aggressive, no need tanning... )

And that concludes the lesson of the day.

    Re: Arowana Planted tank

    wah, gd lesson
To add on, if the xb is of gd genes, it will cross sooner or later. With high lights, the gold tone will be solid... Dark deeper tone
